I've Had It With the BCS

The BCS system to determine the national champion in college football needs to be abandoned or repaired. The Associated Press poll, determined by human analysis and experience, comes closer to correctly ranking teams than a BCS blending of polls and flawed computer rankings that go against common sense and end up making various teams mad. And, then the BCS rules limit conference participation in the BCS bowls, which penalizes other teams in strong conferences. And, I really cannot stand it when they talk about "style" ponts in rankings. Style points!!! Running up a score doesn't impress me as much as a strong defense, but defense doesn't have "style." Good grief. It's a common saying that offense sells tickets but defense wins games. How's winning for style? Give me the good ol' days when various teams played in New Year's bowl games and voters could pick a final winner from any of them. Other people have problems with the BCS, as well...this guy, and him, and these guys, too.

Anyway, here's the bowl schedule. I bet that you didn't know that there were so many. The bowl season starts with that classic "San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl." It only gets better.

Still, I don't like the BCS championship system.

The BCS is a joke.Cris Collinsworth used to do a lot of radio in Cincinnati where he lives and played his pro football. One point he would consistently make is "when nothing else makes sense, the answer is 'money.' "

On the other hand, I'm not upset about the championsihp game because, now, Florida will end this season with a loss.

Woody, what games or rankings are you unhappy with?

Posted by DRJ at December 7, 2006 10:53 PM

DRJ, it's the process that bothers me, whether or not the right two teams are matched for the championship, which is not always the case, besides beomg other issues. The incorrect matching certainly was the situation when Auburn went undefeated in 2004 and couldn't play for the championship, allowing Oklahoma to get blown out by So. Cal. This year, Florida, which honestly is not as good as Michigan, leap-frogged Michigan on the final poll as a "make-up call" to the SEC after the Auburn issues. I would rather see Florida play, but I want them there because they really are the second best team. But, what do you do when Michigan doesn't even win its conference title? The BCS allows a team that did not win its conference title to be national champions. How can you be no. 2 in your conference and no. 1 in the nation? A playoff system would fix many of these problems. On voting, it drives me crazy to see voters give weight to "style points" and big scores. The best and hardest fought game that I've seen in years ended in a 7-3 score. The computer rankings, which are factors, go totally against common sense. One team can beat another closely ranked team and still be rated behind by the "computers." The SEC has teams that cannot go to the higher paying BCS bowls because two already go, and that "wouldn't be fair to the other conferences" if some of their lesser teams weren't put in. Coaches vote against having their votes made public, except for the last poll when it was insisted, and the coaches have conflicts of interests besides being ignorant of what other teams across the nation are doing. Ohio State's coach refused to send in his ballot on the final poll. If he isn't going to vote, no matter how badly he might do it, he has a responsibility. The "politicking" has no place in votes, but it's there, and the AP pulled out of the BCS formula because it was tired of the criticism and pressure that its voters were taking. The BCS folks say that they get it right in the end, but they don't always and there is as much controversy with its choices as there was with the old system of AP and the coaches' poll, which at least allowed a number 3 or 4 team to move to number 1 after the bowls if the 1 and 2 were defeated by other opponents. Well, I could go on a long time, which I have already, but I don't like the BCS for a lot of reasons and it needs to be scrapped before it gets worse.

I don't feel bad about Michigan not being #2. Ohio St. has already beat them one time so what would it prove for them to play again? In essence the national championship game has already been played. The real crime would be if Florida somehow got lucky and beat Ohio St. I wouldn't bet on it, however.

Meanwhile, even Alabama got to go to a bowl game this year. Something mighty wrong with that. And, yes, I'm a lifelong Alabama fan. Sorry Woody, looks like we are set against each other in more ways than one. ;)

However, just to prove that I'm far more conservative than most of you think I am, I absolutely LOATH the new bowl names with the corporate names spliced onto the them. Sorry folks, but this is one place where tradition should stand. It's the Sugar Bowl and NOT the Allstate Sugar Bowl. And what the heck is a "San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia" Bowl anyway? It's not any kind of bowl game that I would ever watch on TV.

Moose, I agree that Michigan had its chance and shouldn't have it again, but the BCS system is supposed to match #1 and #2 even if they have already played.

My family history with Auburn and Alabama is a little unique, especially considering the intense rivalry. This week ESPN had a show on the top ten rivalries in the country, and AU-Ala was no. 1. My dad played for Auburn and mother went there, my brother worked for Bear Bryant and is one of the well-known experts on Crimson Tide football, and I have my Master's from Alabama but was brought up an Auburn fan. I go to games at both campuses during the season.

Right now I'm feeling sorry for The Capstone. Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia has just turned down Alabama's coaching offer. Last night it looked like a sure deal. I don't know what happened, but I'm listening to Finebaum interview Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News right now about it.

Here's the announcement from Bama Magazine.
