Sports Quote of the Day
"Congratulations to Barry Bonds as he ties Major League Baseball's home run record. No matter what anybody thinks of the controversy surrounding this event, Mr. Bonds' achievement is noteworthy and remarkable.
"As I said previously, out of respect for the tradition of the game, the magnitude of the record and the fact that all citizens in this country are innocent until proven guilty, either I or a representative of my office will attend the next few games and make every attempt to observe the breaking of the all-time home run record."
- - Bud Selig, MLB Commissioner
Do you think that he was too nice?

I talked with a close realitve (young, male, avid baseball fan) last night. Called to wish him a Happy Birthday and a number of subjects were briefly touched on. When I mentioned Barry Bonds and wondered what his (my relative's take was, considering the steroid issue), he said that if we looked a ball players today compared with those of some years back, we'd notice how much bigger they are now. He opined that ball players have been doing this for years. This falls, I believe, into the "Gee, Mom, all the other kids are doing it."
So, those that are supposed to oversee baseball, and so very much more, in our country - have decided to overlook "right" to achieve victory (money)....or am I getting this wrong?
BTW, should we go back and validate the East German's Swim teams Olympic "victories"? Should we just let everyone in every "sport" do whatever they want to achieve victory (money)?
Yeh, this is me saying what's right. Who am I to dictate? On the other hand, we've tolerated ill-legal drugs....more or less...in our society for more than forty years. Has this done us ANY good? But,...Gee, Mom, all the other kids are doing it.
Who, indeed, should decide what is right or wrong? Or do we go for with the: "it's none of your business" deal? Of course, it IS my business when it impacts on me and society at large...isn't it?

Almost worse than his cheating with steroids is Bonds' insufferable attitude. I can't wait until A-Rod passes him.

It's a face-saver. The part about "innocent until proven guilty" is important, though. One thing this admits that Bonds is on trial, if only in the court of public opinion - and there "jury" is leaning toward "conviction."
What bugs me about the Giants, more than Barry Bonds, is that at AT&T park (their home stadium) the play-by-play announcer is woman. It's not hip, it's a distraction, a degradation, even a perversion.

Jeremayakovka, maybe the most masculine person that the Giants could find in San Francisco for the play-by-play announcing was a woman.

Whoever wrote Selig's comment must have gone to same school as those who write those mealy-mouthed press statements from college presidents - full of noble-sounding words, signifying nothing.
