Who Wants Cynthia McKinney Parkway Renamed?
A Republican state lawmaker is seeking to strip U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney's name off a DeKalb County road, saying she "has brought embarrassment to the state of Georgia."Posted by Woody M. at December 19, 2006 04:00 PM | TrackBackMcKinney's former campaign manager, John Evans, called Walker's resolution a "mess." And as for Walker's claim that McKinney has caused embarrassment to Georgia, Evans said: "He must be talking about white folks or uppity black folks."
Oh, keep the name, by all means. It is an important part of education to keep them there.
When Hungary broke free of the USSR 15 years ago, they wondered what they should do with all the huge socialist statues in Budapest. To destroy them would seem to be copying the history-destruction of the communists; to keep them seemed to be endorsing them somehow.
They put them in a park on the outskirts of the city, basically in the backyards of a modest residential neighborhood. Grandiose, striding, powerful figures, with swingsets in the background. A perfect ending. If you visit Budapest, I recommend to you the effort of going to see them.

Woody, I'm with you on this one.
Near my old home near LAX, a short little freeway had its name changed from the Maina Freeway to the Richard M Nixon Freeway in the early 70's. It wasn't until the late 70's that the name reverted to it's former name.

In our area, the local politicians take turns naming roads after each other. On the opposite side of Atlanta from Cynthia's road is a segment of I-285 named after her father, a state legislator who once threatened to pull a knife on another legislator during a house session.

I say keep the name also. They need a reminder of the foolish votes they cast.

I'm for keeping her name on the road for the same reason that DADvocate said and so that there may be less chance of such foolish votes being duplicated in the future.
However, I think that some of you are missing the main point from the title. McKinney's campaign manager said that the only people who want the road renamed are "white folks or uppity black folks," so I've underlined that in the article now. Can you imagine the outrage if a Republican had said that it's only (slang for black folks who aren't uppity) who want to attack him.

I guess I've become so accustomed to this sort of racism and class politics that it just rolls off my back. BUT, you are absolutely correct. Hey, look at all the free passes Robert "KKK" Byrd has gotten.
