Zero Tolerance or Zero Brains?

A student in the eighth grade was suspended five days from school for drawing, no make that sketching, a gun. Sketching sounds better.

Student suspended for sketching gun

The uproar over the drawing, which the student turned in with a school assignment, cuts to the question of what constitutes a "threat."

When I was a kid in school, I used to draw bombers dropping bombs and fighter jets shooting bullets. I must have been a threat to the entire city.

School officials have put the student's sketch in his file, which is not open to the public.

Good. Keep that gun drawing locked up where it won't present a threat to anyone else. This kid has no Second Amendment right to a picture of a gun, and we know that pictures of guns kill.

This "zero tolerance" is showing no brains or good judgement by the government school officials. It reminds me of the suspension of a little girl in the Atlanta area for having a Tweety Bird keychain because the school considered it a weapon.

Liberals are easily excited over nothing and throw all common sense aside in these cases.

And, when pictures of guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have pictures of guns.

Women teachers and school administrators should not be in charge of the education of boys. Most are too stupid and biased to the left to understand boys.

I did the same. However, I could never get the Air Force to partake on my plan of a massive air assault on my school.

You can see a picture of the sketch here. Poor art work for a 13 year old.

As I've asked before, why are people this stupid "educating" our kids.

Posted by DADvocate at August 23, 2007 08:36 AM

DADvocate,

People this stupid are educating indoctrinating our kids because we think we have no other choice, mainly.

I think even calling it a "sketch" is giving it more credit than it deserves. I can see this in an Onion piece, "Kid suspended for startlingly poor quality artwork".

Damn, HTML didn't work; "educating" was supposed to be struck. :P

DADvocate, I had not seen the actual drawing until you provided the link in your comment. Wow! That is really scary and is a threat to everyone on the internet. They need to take that picture off of the web page, now, before someone gets seriously hurt! I bet that the liberals are having convulsions at this moment.

Your article gave a little more information, but I liked this affirmation of the action:

"Chandler district spokesman Terry Locke said the crude sketch was 'absolutely considered a threat,' and that threatening words or pictures are punishable."

Of course, some teacher could have handled this in 30 seconds and it would be over, just to make people happy. But, everything becomes a federal case to crazy people.

I'm not gonna touch blindare's nutty comment (women can't take care of kids anymore? What ever happened to conservative values?), but I will say that 99% of liberals don't support this kind of overreaction. In fact, Woody, unless there's more info than you link to, this is just the kind of thing Celeste writes about over on witnessla.com. Why don't you send the item over to her and see if she'll post about it as well - imagine, conservatives and liberals not blaming each other but uniting against stupidity.

That was beautiful, Woody :)

Mavis, you wouldn't believe how many things that I send to Celeste every day. Yesterday, the city of Atlanta proposed a regulation like one mentioned a few days ago here about making it illegal to walk around with your pants half way down your fanny--and, the ACLU is fighting that. I sent that to her, and I bet that she's right on it. Also, I sent her the clip that the NAACP wants the Falcons to allow Michael Vick back on the team after this inconvenience about the dogs. I wonder who in prison wants to be Michael Vick's bitch.

Whereas maybe a majority of liberals might disapprove of the school's action on this, such ridiculous policies and reactions result from the demands of liberals--not conservatives. Let anything happen and we hear, "The government needs to do something," from them.

I understand what BinDare meant. Any boy growing up will tell you that girls get special treatment by the teachers. There are articles and books on this. I hope Celeste picks up on that, since she has a son.

Until you see the picture you really don't know what's going on here. A drawing of a gun by itself is probably not a threat. A drawing of a gun pointing at a drawing of a teacher... yeah... that's a threat. And believe me, teachers do get threatened by students all the time. I know of one teacher who wound up with a nail in each tire on her car and had her classroom broken into and vandalized. Stuff like this has to be taken seriously. Teachers have rights, too!

Okay... I went looking on the net for a copy of the drawing and found one here:

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=57276

I'd have to say there's little cause for a suspension here, unless the child had previously shown some kind of unstable behavior.

Uhm, a typical liberal response here, but if the family knows the child had never behaved in a threatening manner then they should probably sue.

Posted by e. nonee moose at August 23, 2007 01:48 PM

moose, let me tell you about one teacher's rights. Someone close to me was teaching in Alabama. During her free period, a young man entered her classroom and tried to forcibly take her purse and hit her very hard. When she went to the principal to report it and find the person, he asked her what she did to make him so angry at her. The principal refused to let her use the phone to call the police, but she went somewhere else to report this, for which he became very angry at her himself. At least he didn't hit her.

Why mention that...well, to get it off of my chest, partly, but also to illustrate that school adminstrators are more concerned with enforcing rules and playing politics rather than doing what is right, which might negatviely affect their performance records.

What do you want to bet that the teacher knew this student well and was more afraid not to report him than afraid of him? And, so it went up the line.

My experience is that educators are trained to follow guidelines rather than use common sense--and the penalties for not following guidelines are worse than the penalties of hurting the lives of students.

Posted by Woody at August 23, 2007 01:56 PM

moose, I responded to your first post before seeing your second post. I think that the kid was being a typical, stupid adolescent--but, not dangerous.

Posted by Woody at August 23, 2007 01:58 PM

Wait, are you siding with the ACLU against the nanny state regulating pants or with the fashion-obsessed nanny state against the litigious ACLU. I'm pretty sure you can't win.

Just FYI, I think there's a pretty strong case that this suspension is an overzealous application of the get-tough, zero-tolerence policies often advocated by conservatives. Regardless, if we use common sense and don't treat kids like burgeoning criminals we can avoid stuff like this.

Posted by Mavis Beacon at August 23, 2007 02:22 PM

Mavis, I'm siding with decency that says that you can't walk around with your pants around your ankles, just as I oppose public nudity.

Zero tolerance was not a conservative value.

Teachers and especially administrators revel in displaying mock indignation over tiny or nonexistent offences. They behave as if they are starring in a community theatre revival of 'MY UNCLE STALIN'. If something serious does happen, they then act as if it is nothing. They live their lives dancing on the head of the pin of cognitive dissonance.

The staff and adminisrators at almost all schools have inverted their moral compasses so that they condemn anything good in children, and reward that which is unexceptional, nihilistic, or just plain evil. Liberals teachers are the way they are because the prime motivator in their lives is self loathing. Most of them also actually appear to dislike, if not plainly hate kids.

In Toronto, a kindergarten teacher with seven years experience makes $72,000.00 per year. The pension fund of the Province of Ontario teachers has more in assets than the Canadian Pension Plan. The Ontario teachers are major stakeholders in the Toronto Blue Jays.

The children are fed a steady diet of multiculturalism, black history, native studies, and gender sensitivity. When the average Canadian kid graduates, the 50 odd percent that actually do with a full course load, they read at a grade six level, they can't accurately make change for a dollar, and are equally uniformed about any subject one cares to question them on. They do know however all about how evil America is, how pure Canadians are, and of course, how to life off the dole, dress like a prostitute, and get or make a pregnancy.

The rot in schools goes way back. When I was in high school in the early 70's, the science teacher was a junkie, and everyone knew. The head of the history department was dating a 15 year old student, and everyone knew. The gym teacher had a prediliction for boys and again, everyone knew.

Zero tolerance and safe school notions have been turned inside out to feed the moral perversion of those that work in the school industry. Schools are an industry, whose primary purpose has become the slack job conditions, and amazing benefits and pensions of those that work their. The last thing the average teacher really care about are the kids.

Many young people enter teaching with the notion of doing some good in this world. It doesn't take too long before the overwhelming percentage of them get with the union program.

drawings of guns don't kill people.

the papercuts you get from the paper upon which the drawings reside will kill you however.
