Global Warming - Can ABC Make It More Stupid? [Updated]
Man, is this ever going to bring the global warming loonies out of the woodwork. Since global warming has been "proved" by Al Gore's movie, now the next thing that the left wants are personal observations of the global warming crisis(?) for the rest of the unwashed masses. ABC asks for your personal examples--such as ice cubes melting in your favorite beverage faster than they used to or how it was really, really hot last Saturday and it must be George Bush's fault. That ought to be good for them, even though it does a disservice to science.
Here's ABC's article and request:
ABC News 06/21/2006
Global Warming Affecting Your Life? E-Mail Us
Send Us Your Stories and Video...Extend the Reach of ABC News' Reporting by Sharing Your Observations
Witnessing the impact of global warming in your life?ABC News wants to hear from you. We're currently producing a report on the increasing changes in our physical environment, and are looking for interesting examples of people coping with the differences in their daily lives. Has your life been directly affected by global warming?
We want to hear and see your stories. Have you noticed changes in your own backyard or hometown? The differences can be large or small — altered blooming schedules, unusual animals that have arrived in your community, higher water levels encroaching on your property.
Show us what you've seen. You can include video material of the environmental change, or simply tell your story via webcam. Please fill out the form below, and be sure to include captions or other descriptive information if you're sending video. We hope to hear from you. Thank you.
Of course, none of this is really science and none of it approaches proving that man-induced global warming is a problem, but don't let that spoil their fun. Maybe they can incorporate these personal examples into phony climate models, make a documentary, and tell us that we have to start watering the golf courses only twice a week--which is going too far.
I had a television weatherman eat dinner with me and he told me that the Atlantic Ocean would be within twenty miles of Atlanta within ten years. I said that was great, because we wouldn't have to drive as far to go to the beach. Hey, I take this seriously. He never even caught what I said. Oh, that was a several years ago, so something better happen fast or he's going to have to explain the delay--like global warming turned into a global freeze. Some have actually done that. There are no limites to their rationalizations to take the spotlight and to use issues of nature for political purposes.
Well, back to ABC's request, we don't want only nut cases to share personal examples and observations of global warming to be used as propaganda. Let's share our observations with them, too! In fact, throw in examples that counter global warming, like how you hurt your back shoveling five feet of snow off of your driveway last winter...and you live in Houston. Or, in supprt, come up with something more silly than the left, if that's possible--like seeing that armadillos are now migrating futher north and that you're pretty sure that you saw one outside of Chattanooga, but it could have been a possum on the half shell. I'm sure that you can come up with some great examples for them--and, they deserve it.
Don't let rational global warming skeptics down. Come up with your examples, be sure to post them on ABC's site, and then tell us what you said. It should be a lot of fun and will let them know how ridiculous many of us view their completely off-the-wall attempt to further drive the global warming hysteria with tales of gloom by everyday people who are not scientists but who want to feel important as activists. I can hardly wait to read their stories.
Get started and go to this site and do your duty.
***** Update *****
Oh, I found another site just as stupid as ABC's: TargetGlobalWarming
Here's what the site says about its organization, which claims to be for hunters and fishermen: (You decide if it's accurate, or if it just represents liberal hunters and fishermen.)
National Wildlife Action advocates for the conservation interests.... Like our sister organization, the National Wildlife Federation, NWA is committed to inspiring Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future.
Targetglobalwarming.org is an exciting new project of National Wildlife Action. The website was created to engage sportsmen and women across the country on the issue of global warming. It is a place for hunters and anglers to voice their concerns about the impacts of a changing climate on America’s outdoor heritage.
I knew this had to be a liberal site when they said that they are doing this "for the childrennnn." Everything liberal is "for the childrennnn." When you google the organization's name you find nothing but activist support for liberal causes. I think that they are really hunting for Republicans and angling for fish stories.
Okay, here's their recap on their brilliant poll and where they give you a chance to add your own personal global warming tales.
When it comes to observing wildlife and wild places, America's 40 million hunters and anglers have long had a front row seat. What have they witnessed in the past few years in the woods and on the waters where they hunt and fish? According to the National Wildlife Federation's Opinion Survey of Hunters and Anglers, a majority are already seeing changes in climate and attributing it to global warming.
Note that they mention 40 million outdoor enthusists as if they actually represented them and as if the opinions of those people are accurately portrayed on the site. That's like me saying that I represent accountants and that there are ten million of us and they all agree with me. They just might not know that I represent them and many might not accept my positions.
Then, these guys go on to display the poll evidence evidence of climate change with observations like these: Warmer or Shorter Winters, Less Snow, Earlier Bloom Times, .... Go to their site and see these yourself.
But, then they follow up with this brilliant question: Do you believe that the weather condition(s) that you observed is/are related to global warming?
Great! What does that prove? They first ask for subjective conclusions on weather conditions for the last year or two and then follow that up with a subjective question as to whether or not global warming is the cause--from people who have no idea. It's all about polls and perception--not truth.
Of course, such changes can be measured objectively and scientifically and such tests should be carried out over a much longer period of time. Then, if the data suggests that changes have occured, doesn't it make more sense for science to determine why rather than get the opinions of some hunters and anglers--and activists?
But, guess what. They'll fool a lot of people and just hope that they get their unproven, economy destroying legislation passed before everyone catches on--which is the normal plan for the left. The Democrats always have a hard time during campaigns because they have to hide their true agenda and historical records and hope for enough time to get elected before anyone uncovers them. Thank goodness the majority of Americans aren't as stupid or gullible as this organzation and Al Gore would hope--and as John Kerry found out.
Save us from the idiots of the left.

Your posts have the finesse, wit, and intelligence of a semi-retarded dyslectic reading Finnegan’s wake.
There is you and then there is Science.
Keep thumbing the tub, America isn't already stupid enough watching "America's Got Talent."

Aaron: Huh?
Well I can sure tell you that living on the marsh has been devastating for us. Lately I've noticed that twice a day the water looks higher.
And we saw a weird lizard out back too. Proof that it's because of global warming? Well, it used to be a pet for the guy down the street and he has an SUV.

Aaron Cole: "Your posts have the finesse, wit, and intelligence of a semi-retarded dyslectic..."
Aaron, both Woody and I have noted in the past that when we put up a serious or even a humorous post like this one, some true believer (and no, Aaron, that was not a compliment) comes in and begins with the ad hominem attacks without even making an attempt to discuss, let alone argue, the points made.
Then too, Aaron, when you make accusations such as “…semi-retarded dyslectic…” you should at least be intelligent enough to be able to spell dyslexic (which is the accepted version of the word and not some odd archaic variant that almost no one will recognize- unless of course you are attempting to show your erudition.) You should also be aware that the phrase is “thumping the tub” and not “thumbing the tub.” Of course, I wouldn’t expect someone who uses other people’s retardation as a put down to understand that.
If you are going to make fun of retarded citizens in an attempt to put down me or Woody, than you should be ashamed of yourself. But, I seriously doubt that you are; in fact, I’m willing to bet that you think you were being quite witty. I guess there is no accounting for some folks sense of humor (or totally, inexplicable lack of one) (and yes, I’ll give you a moment to look up the word inexplicable.)
If you are truly going to attempt a battle of wits with Woody or me, please be aware that both of us refuse to do battle with those who are only half armed, and you might ask someone to explain that to you since I doubt that you have the intellect to do so.
Lastly Aaron, I’ll probably have to give you a pretty good degree of intelligence, unfortunately, it is not accompanied by any class or smarts (know what I mean Vern?).
Posted by GM at June 22, 2006 02:14 PM
Aaron, then I suppose that someone as smart as you believes that there are "interesting examples of people coping with the differences in their daily lives...and been directly affected by global warming." If that's science to you, then I guess that you fell for Al Gore's movie, too. Oops. I guess you did.
Global warming is not proven by anecdotal evidence of people feeling like it's hotter today or that their grass needs more watering. That's about the level of intelligence and belief system of global warming activists; and, even their "scientists" do the same thing by touting retreating glaciers or broken ice bergs that have nothing to do with proving global warming and man's impact on it, if of any significance.
Do you think that maybe, just maybe, this is a political tactic to attack U.S. industry, our world position, our Republican leadership, and that it might be useful to line the pockets of advocates?
Funny, whenever a Democrat is in office we don't have these problems; but, whenever a Republican is in office, all of a sudden these issues are extreme priorities. We had homelessness until Bill Clinton got in office, and then it suddenly disappeared. We didn't have global warming under Clinton, but now we do under a Republican. It's funny how those things work, huh?
Let me make a wild guess. You're a liberal and vote for Democrats! Right? It's uncanny how I can do that.
Posted by Woody at June 22, 2006 02:40 PM
Aaron please don't make fun of, no, insult people who are retarded. They are smarter than you from the looks of your comment. I think you are a liberal...and liberals are supposed to advocate and promote those less fortunate than the rest of us. You show proof of that LIE.

I forget where I found this, but it is PROOF of global warming:

Laugh away. Just make sure your bright red noses don't fall off and don't trip over each other's big floppy shoes.
I don't know why I bother with the willfully ignorant...
Posted by reg at June 22, 2006 04:01 PM
Ahh reg, it's cause you love us don't you cutie pie?
Willfully ignorant? "There you go again!" Come back soon, I'll be posting again I'm sure and poke a few holes in that report with some other facts that were conviently left out. Such as "Glaciers melting" Come on reg, everyone knows that glaciers flow down from the highest peak to the lowest (sea level) and then they break off. The pack at the peak is ... wait for it ... increasing! in Antartica in Greenland and NOT Mt. Kilimanjaro but not because of global warming, that ice has been retreating for over 100 years due to decreased moisture in the area... oh, wait, is decreased moisture an effect of global warming... nah, because if there is global warming, there is MORE moisture in the air from evaporation which is what happens when you warm up water...
Sheesh reg, at least you could argue with us rationally rather than just say we were "willfully ignorant." Or, are you and Aaron reading off of the same page? Ahh, that must be it. In which case, read what I told Aaron and pretend it applies to you too.
Sheesh!!!!

Hey GM it's hot in here. Will you turn down the global warming meter please?? LOL.
Posted by Raven at June 22, 2006 08:04 PM
GMR - So this report is fiction? Who knew? Presumably your discourse on glaciers - although I admit I don't consider myself capable of evaluating it - is proof of such. I mean "rational argument" and all that. I guess I'll trust you and Woody on this one, because you make a lot of jokes and can rattle on with special knowledge about glaciers which the team of climatologists in question obviously haven't considered. I really look forward to your taking down the National Academy of Sciences in even greater depty. Who's next ? Those crazy guys at NIH who assert that HIV is the cause of AIDS ? Go get 'em.
(And I'd suggest emailing Rep. Boehlert with your discourse on glaciers before he gets bamboozled by the professionals.)
Oh...and if anybody tries to tell you "a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing", explain to them that if it's really, really little, not to worry.
Posted by reg at June 22, 2006 08:31 PM
sorry, that would be "depth" not "depty"
Posted by reg at June 22, 2006 08:32 PM
reg, sarcasm to be effective must be on the point and funny. Your attempt is neither. There are indeed a lot of climatologists that have weighed forth on glaciers, but as york says, they aren't glaciologists are they. There have been glaciologists that have said that the GW brouhaha is just that, brouhaha and there are climatologists that have said GW is so much bunk. Now, a rational person, and you have as admitted as much that you aren't ("I'll trust you and Woody on this one...") Yes, I know you are joking and I'm not being serious about you not being rational either. However, unless you are a true believer like York, you will admit that there are valid points of view on the non-gw issue and that information needs to be taken into account.
This is one of the reasons that Woody and I make fun of the GW True Believers is because they take their stuff so damnnably serious. I'm not saying the issue isn't serious, it is, but geesh reg!
Part of the problem is the True Believer tendency to immediately discount entirely without any rational reason the efforts of meteorologists, climitologists, glaciologists etc that have a differing point of view. For example, when one of the worlds foremost authorities on hurricaines and typhoons says that the recent upsurge is cyclic York and the other True Believers say "hey, he isn't a climitologist what the heck does he know?" Well, climitologists are not glaciologists either so why should we listen to a climitologist about glacier formation? Get what I'm saying.
If you want to present specific facts and the link that you found it under that's fine, but snark doesn't cut it; well, maybe a little is fun...
There are good people on both sides of this argument and discounting one entire side because it doesn't accept conventional wisdom (if indeed it is that) is antithetical to rational discourse.
By the way, I appreciate your reining in your tendency to cuss. I really do.
And no, I didn't say the report was fiction, I implied that it may be in error in some areas, or, that the presenters were presenting only their point of view and not both sides of an issue. And believe me, there are indeed two sides to this issue.
For example, there is this and this both articles of which have well respected scientists arguing that there is either no global warming as such or that what warming does occur may be due to other factors than anthropomorphic causes. And there is this tidbit when the science group that you linked to was first set up: "Mr. Barton's inquiry drew a rebuke from several scientific societies as well as fellow Republican Sherwood Boehlert of New York, chairman of the House Committee on Science, who called it a blatant effort to intimidate global-warming researchers." You don't suppose Boehlert has an agenda and that the folks in the article you cited catered to that agenda do you. That is the same argument that York and others have used to discount some researchers... a secondary agenda.

GM, thanks for the two references in your response to Reg. Far too often there is a refusal to even consider any source or evidence that refutes one's position on the global warming or any of a host of other politicized arguments. This can certainly apply to either side in argument, even though it seems to happen most often with passionate liberals who can't conceive that they could be wrong. Oh well......
Now to the crux, I wonder if you or Woody could advise me. Seems like with global warming going on, my heat rash starts in February now, not in April. This is quite a problem here in Houston especially with my delicate backside. Should I contact ABC? Thanks.
Mike
