Cinco de Mayo - New American Holiday
Well, we do have some things in common with Mexico and owe thanks to them for their past help. I don't think that the Mexican victory over France saved the U.S., but Mexicans have been our friends and allies. Differences between friends can be worked out.
Cinco HistoryThe 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be.
(Read the body of the article for details.)
Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans. That's why Cinco de Mayo is such a party -- A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862. VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!
Today, let's forget about immigration and, as individuals, celebrate this day of independence--a shared belief in liberty--with our friends from Mexico.

I ate lunch at a Mexican restaurant to celebrate and show my respect for the Mexicans. To show their respect for me, the Mexicans asked for dollars rather than pesos.

Here's the deal: Ask the next 100 citizens what Cinco de Mayo is, or what it commemorates.
IF, and it is a big IF, they can answer at all, most will say it is Mexican Independence Day.
Yep.
I live w/i 15 miles of the Mexican border (BTW: why do so many people use the word "boarder"? Another one: It is "Marshal" not "Marshall")..anyway...as I am an instructor of history at the local community college, I ask many students the above question. Nearly all know nothing about it. The few who do, know few of the facts.
The French!? Emperor Maximillian, an Austrian Archduke w/ a loony Belgian princess wife!? And why did the U.S. do nothing? Uh, the American Civil War.
What we have are pieces of a puzzle. If one doesn't learn about many of the pieces, so to speak, one really never sees the picture. This is like most of the Left, and others, that are so very easily led as they don't really know much.
How about I throw in Otto von Bismark and the Franco-Prussian War. What it Otto had taken "early retirement"? There would have been no Germany...you know, slamming Prussia together with all those small German kingdoms, duchies, principalities, etc. Napoleon III would not have felt threatened and might have not recalled the French Army. Maybe Mexicans would be saying "Bon Jour" vice "Buenos Dias". Probably not.
In conclusion, my hair is on fire, so to speak, about how very little history and geography are taught in school. However, if you give students an exam on PEOPLE magazine, the latest troll who makes lots of noise and claims to be a musician/singer or other such stuff and nonsense, they'll do very well. And what exactly is the purpose of public education? Why are we paying all those taxes? Why do we have to pay more taxes so that remedial education can be given? Does no on really understand about Rewards and Punishments?
Will Tad ever stop? Yes.
