Brother Against Brother
Two young women, blogging at Euphoric Reality have researched and written extensively regarding
"The first in a seven-part series about jealousy, truth, and honor between men who fought in a place called Vietnam."Their article today is the first of a series. A Sample:
"Throughout its history, the United States military has been home to some of the greatest warriors found anywhere in the world. Story after story can be found of men who distinguished themselves on the battlefield; their actions a testament to the bravery and sacrifice that has made and kept our nation free. All one needs to do is read the National Archives; the military websites; the award citations of soldiers like Medal of Honor recipient Sgt First Class Paul Smith and Silver Star recipient Leigh Ann Hester to know the caliber of men and women that have unselfishly stepped forward, answering the call of our country’s defense."Go and read the whole thing, you won't be disappointed. Posted by GM Roper at July 25, 2005 04:47 AM | TrackBack"Vietnam was no exception. In the midst of a world that had seemingly gone mad; in the thick of humid jungles and against an enemy with no uniforms and no rules, men fought bravely and with honor. For many, the honor came not in exemplary deeds, but for simply having the courage to step onto a helicopter day after day; to go out on patrol, to keep fighting the fight. For some, it came as they stood outside a full chopper crying; not out of fear, but because their brothers were dying out on a knoll and there was no room on the helicopter for them to go and help try to save them. As in any conflict, in Vietnam there were those who rose above the call of duty, giving more than anyone asked or expected."
Now that Kit Jarrell and Heidi Thiess of Euphoric Reality have apparently finished their now 10-part series, which portrays us as villains, and Gary Linderer and his band of brothers as selfless heroes, we will be posting our rebuttal on the web next week. We will place a notice on Wizbang and on the Thiess/Jarrell site when it's ready and give a pointer to the web location.
The conduct of these two women in writing their "Brother Against Brother" series has demonstrated beyond a doubt that they are ill qualified to tell this story fairly. Our mistake was believing Thiess and Jarrell when they said they were "investigative journalists." Instead, they have clearly demonstrated that they ascribe to the Michael Moore school of blogging and employ the Dan Rather method of investigative journalism.
We have also learned a great lesson that you can’t tell a blog by its cover. We should have requested a copy of THEIR DD214’s before we began dealing with them in depth after they responded to our original email and said they wanted to investigate our allegations against Gary Linderer. Their DD214’s would have given us a better idea just how qualified these two women actually were to do a story of this magnitude and complexity. In their zeal to support Mr. Linderer and his buddies, they have deliberately misstated important facts, omitted inconvenient facts that support our allegations against him, and have engaged in extreme hyperbole and mischaracterization, the likes of which one usually sees on extremist left-wing blogs.
Our rebuttal next week will illustrate exactly why they are ill qualified to investigate anything to do with combat operations in Vietnam, and, in our opinion, anything to do with combat operations period. We will show readers that Thiess and Jarrell have been suckered in by Gary Linderer and his very vocal group of supporters, and that they have engaged in the very same sort of disinformation tactics that Linderer and his men have employed with great success over the years.
Because of their behavior, it is apparent to us that Thiess and Jarrell are of a character that causes them to feel a deep kinship with Linderer and his men, and as they got to know Linderer and his supporters more fully, they felt a deep desire to be accepted by them. It’s easier to go with the group against the two than it is to stand with the two against the group. And, if you have to distort facts or omit damning evidence in order to accomplish that, well, the ends justify the means. The irony is that these two gullible and mendacious women have helped Gary Linderer's small group of "Vietnam fabulists" embellish the 20 November 1968 story even further, even to the laughable point of contradicting what they wrote in their books.
As we’ve said over and over again, if a thousand people tell a lie, it doesn’t make it the truth. Stay tuned…

Note from G.M.'s Corner:
The above comment from the Hall's relates to an article referenced by G.M. for which he has more knowledge about this matter than do I. However, as G.M. is out of town and he has asked me to monitor the site and as we want to be fair, I am approving this comment to be posted. There are always two sides to a story, and when someone claims to have been wronged, we want to give them the chance to have their say and possibly clear the record. So, here is the comment. The rebuttal may make for some interesting reading and conversation. In any event, it is important for the facts to be put forth for all to consider and the truth to be made clear.

Woody, the Halls have been publicizing "their version" for nine years. Our research was at their behest, and even though they claimed to want to know the truth (they specifically said "they hoped they were wrong about this"), when we presented them with our documented findings, they denied any facts but their own.
Our 10 part series IS the rebuttal to their 9-year campaign to smear these veterans. It appears from their above comment that they hope to prove their case by attacking Kit and I personally. That's OK - we're ready for that. After all, they DID warn us before we published that they would "ruin our reputations as bloggers" - and so we're not surprised that they'll try. They WILL tear down anyone who doesn't agree with their vendetta - they've followed this destructive pattern for almost a decade.

Thank you, Heidi. I appreciate what you said, and I'll let G.M. sort this out when he gets back. I've seen people like you are describing, and if the Hall's are like that, then they will look worse rather than better. Hang in there and don't let personal attacks get to you. Respect the truth and people will respect you.

I appreciate the fairness, Woody. =) I'm confident the facts stand on their own. And you're right - their comment SHOULD stay so people can make their own informed decision based on those facts. =)

At last we have Annette Hall’s response---posted as commentary to Chapter One and again to Chapter Ten. True to Mrs. Hall’s accustomed form, it is more a personal attack than a response to anything in Brother Against Brother. But then, what else do the Halls have at this point, beyond personal attacks? After years of trumpeting the documents they claimed to have backing their contentions about the bloody events of 20 November, 1968, and the character of Gary Linderer, all of the Hall’s “documentary evidence†has been obliterated by the many documents that the Halls somehow (willfully?) overlooked, and that Kit Jarrell and Heidi Thiess managed to find. Heidi and Kit also managed to find and interview many survivors of the battle, eyewitnesses to the battle, and many others who listened to it on military radio nets as it was happening. The Halls have absolutely none of this testimony. They never have, and never will. The Halls’ various imaginary renderings of those bloody events never had much (if any) credibility. And now they have none. What other response is available to the Halls, except for their normal personal attacks? Silence, perhaps? An apology along the lines of the one they once promised Kit and Heidi if they were proven to be wrong? Well, they’ve been proven to have been gravely and maliciously wrong, but there is no apology from the Halls. And now Annette’s silence has been broken.
Annette Hall accuses Kit and Heidi of having written a series “which portrays us as villains, and Gary Linderer and his band of brothers as selfless heroes…†Annette and Don Hall are, rightfully, not even mentioned in the chapters that deal with the 20 November, 1968, battle. But once they do appear in Brother Against Brother, once they begin their vendetta against Gary Linderer and all connected with them, they most certainly do come across as villains. Annette blames Kit and Heidi for that portrayal. But almost all of the material in Brother Against Brother that deals with the Halls is either in Don’s words or Annette’s----and almost all of this reeks with misrepresentation, slander, paranoia, viciousness, and attempted character assassination. Mrs. Hall writes, reasons, and spells much better than her husband, but when it comes to jealous bile and virulence, the two of them are in a league they share with no one else I’ve ever encountered. If the Halls come across as villains, it is because the Halls showcase their own villainy in their almost every word and action. All Kit and Heidi did was print what the Halls themselves had sent out to them and other people, but that was enough to show the Halls’ true character. As for Gary Linderer and the other men---Lurps, aviators, reaction force, and even North Vietnamese soldiers---who fought in that 20 November, 1968, battle that Annette Hall and her husband have spent years trying to portray as a fake contact: if they are “heroes†it is their actions that day that made them so, not anything Kit or Heidi wrote about them these many years later. It certainly isn’t a judgement Annette Hall or her husband are qualified to make. If Gary Linderer has a “band of brothers†it is because Gary has earned the brotherhood of many. Annette Hall’s husband, poor Donald, on the other hand, has no brothers left anymore and no real friends either. Donald Hall has done much to earn his outcast status, and he deserves it deeply. But those of us who have had to deal with the Halls over the years know to give Mrs. Hall her share of credit for Donald’s sad state. Her nagging, goading, encouragement and irrepressible tendency to speak for him have surely played an instrumental part in his downfall.
Along with being the only literate writer involved, was Annette Hall also the animating spirit behind their self published book, I Served? And was it Annette who encouraged Don to submit the notorious “Vulture Flight†story from that book to Behind the Lines? For years Annette Hall has been commenting on military matters about which she knows only what her mentally jumbled husband tells her. But in her commentary she writes this of Kit and Heidi: “We should have requested a copy of THEIR DD214’s before we began dealing with them in depth after they responded to our original email and said they wanted to investigate our allegations against Gary Linderer. Their DD214’s would have given us a better idea just how qualified these two women actually were to do a story of this magnitude and complexity.â€Â
Amazing! The blind stupid gall of this woman to write such a thing and post it on a site where every reader already knows what sort of person she is! Kit and Heidi are veterans. They do have DD214s---and they are under no obligation to show them to the Halls. But where is Annette Hall’s DD214? As far I know, she is not a veteranâ€â€except perhaps by very, very weak injection. If she is a military veteran, why doesn’t she send out as many copies of her DD214 as she did of her smear sheet against Gary Linderer, so that all the thousands of people to whom she libeled Gary will be able to judge her qualifications?
In her commentary Annette writes: “it is apparent to us that Thiess and Jarrell are of a character that causes them to feel a deep kinship with Linderer and his men…†Mrs. Hall is not a stupid woman, at least not if her husband is setting the baseline for stupidity. Does she not realize what a fine compliment it is to write that Heidi and Kit are of a character to feel a deep kinship with Gary Linderer and men like Riley Cox, Jim Venable, Jim Bacon, Frank Souza, Mike Reiff, Art Herringhausen, Terry Clifton, Mike Reiff, Tony Tercero and the other men of the reaction force, the aviators who flew that day, and the hundreds---no, thousands---of other people, veterans and civilians alike, who consider Gary Linderer a true gentleman and a brother?
Mrs. Hall should remember that Heidi Thiess and Kit Jarrell started looking into all of this on her instigation, not Gary Linderer’s. She obviously didn’t expect them to really investigate, nor did she expect them to write as well as they do. But she should have expected at least some minimal amount of intelligence, honesty, and basic decency. Kit and Heidi have abundant reserves of all those qualities. Mrs. Hall may have some intelligence---particularly compared to her husband. But she seems to lack even a shred of honesty and decency---and doesn’t seem to have much grasp of reality, either. Because she lacks these qualities herself, she apparently didn’t expect to find them in Kit and Heidi. Mrs. Hall made a major mistake there!
Mrs. Hall and her husband can---and probably will---continue to threaten people. They can post whatever they like on their website, and the idly curious may visit their site, but no one will ever believe them again. They can claim to have unused and secret hidden information and documents they’ve been holding back, but again no one will believe them. Their credibility in all matters is gone forever. They can---and probably will---threaten to dig into peoples’ private lives for things to use against them, and perhaps they will manage to hurt someone or someone’s family. They can continue to focus their lives around that Great Satan, Gary Linderer, but their devotion will not be rewarded. They can keep snapping and snarling and clawing themselves ever deeper into the pit they have dug for themselves, but they will be alone in that pit. They will never recover whatever honor and whatever place among decent humanity they may have once had. Donald will never dare to show his face at any military reunion or veterans function where anyone is likely to recognize him, and Annette will most likely suffer the utter humiliation of remaining married to Don for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Hall can rage and slander and threaten all she wants. She and her husband have been exposed as the spiteful and poisonous clowns that they are. No one respects her, no one fears her, and except for laughs, no one will listen to her anymore.

From Gary Linderer's book EYES BEHIND THE LINES. "For some reason, when people read something in print, they have a tendency to believe it; tell them the same story face to face, and they think you’re making it up. VC tax collectors and supply parties often traveled the trails in the AO at night.â€Â
From Linderer's book. “We spent the evening drinking and getting totally blown away. We raised alot of hell, and I guess I probably overdid it with the war stories. They must have been impressed, because most offered their sisters to me before the night was over. Audie Murphy didn’t have a thing on

******************************************
FROM MILITARY BOOK CLUB INTERVIEW OF GARY LINDERER.
MBC: That's a hell of final exam! In the book, you name names. Did you change any names?
GL: No.
MBC: I'm thinking of the "toe-popper" incident. Do you feel you've any
responsibility by withholding this knowledge?
GL: Well, what happened there was a war crime as far as our government is concerned. And there is no statue of limitations on that. No one saw or knew
anything. It just happened. (Note to readers) We're talking about an unpopular LRP officer who stepped on a small anti-personnel mine that had been placed at the entrance to his hooch.
GL: It happened when I was there. The entire company was intensely questioned by the CID after that incident. A few people knew who the
perpetrators were and other found out later. That secret has never been divulged and never will be. That captain had already gotten some people
killed in an infantry outfit he'd commanded earlier, and had demonstrated that he hadn't learned from his mistakes. There was no doubt in our minds
that he would accomplish the same feat in our company. There is no going over anyone's head to a higher authority in a situation like that.
MBC: Tough times, tough measures.
GL: All of us realized back then that on a mission we had to rely on each other. The six men were trained as a team and relied on each other's
judgment and performance. Usually, when we lost people in the field, it was because somebody outside the team made a mistake, or because our support was not there, or because a decision was made by higher authority to keep a team
in after it was compromised. That call should always be the team leader's. Many times it was taken away from him, and we lost people as a result.
MBC: Do you ever hear from people who come out less than heroically in your books?
GL: That captain tried to come to our first reunion. He stayed in the service, by the way, and was a retired lieutenant colonel at the time of the
reunion. One of our First Sergeants contacted him when he found out that he was planning on coming. He told him it would not be advisable for him to
show up. When the officer asked why, he was told that someone might try and finish the job. The man still did not understand why this had happened to
him, even at that late date. I don't think he ever fully realized that it was one of our people that did it.
MBC: Well, I guess he figured it out at that point.
GL: He had only been in the company four days when this happened. But in those four days, he had not endeared himself to anyone. He was probably a
very competent officer, but his technique was not conducive to a unit in combat. His military bearing and his attitude demonstrated that he was the
only one to call the shots, even with a team on the ground. His command style might have worked in a stateside unit, but it would only succeed in
getting people killed in combat.
MBC: What's the difference between a tab Ranger and a scroll Ranger?
GL: The tab is an insignia you are authorized to wear when you successfully
complete Ranger school. The scroll is an insignia you are authorized to wear
for serving in a Ranger unit. And it's a big difference. Ranger school is
conducted in the States. The training runs approximately sixty days. During
the Vietnam War, officers and NCOs attended the course. It was a definite
feather in their cap-for career people anyway. They also took the top 10% of
the people who graduated from the NCO academy. Outside of that it was really
tough for a recruit, even after going to Airborne school, to get into Ranger
training. It was a stateside course that qualified people for small unit
actions, night patrolling, escape and evasion, survival…that type of thing.
It wasn't necessarily programmed for what LRPs did in Vietnam. It wasn't set
up for long-range patrolling. It was geared more to infantry platoon or
squad patrolling. However, any training of this type is beneficial. The
Ranger course gives its students confidence in their leadership ability,
night movement, map reading, calling in artillery, the same kind of things
we also did in the LRPs.
MBC: You said you had some guilt feelings.
GL: Yeah, I was bothered by guilt for years after Vietnam. Still am. Some things happened on a Nov. 20, 1968 mission when my team was surrounded. I
didn't think we were going to get out. It was that mission and the lightning mission that finally finished me. After going through that twice, and
writing yourself off - and accepting the fact you were going to die-well, I was at the point where I knew couldn't do this anymore. I had 28 missions in
Vietnam and I think 9 or 10 were contact missions and 2 or 3 were petty bad contact missions. Every one of them took a piece of me and never gave it
back. After a while you just don't have enough left to do it anymore.
MBC: Do you feel you've discharged your responsibility in writing this book?
GL: I think I'm still discharging it. My goal when I started out writing was to leave a legacy for my boys. It morphed into leaving a legacy for all the men that served in the long range patrol units during the Vietnam war.
MBC: : How's your health holding out?
GL: There's a double knee replacement in my future, but I'm still very active. I do a lot of hunting and fishing, even though the knees have slowed me down some. I've got three screwed-up discs in my back from when I got hit by the lightning and wrapped around a tree. I've been on disability pension for that since '72. And they give me 30% for PTSD. I sleep no more than two or three hours a night. Matter of fact, that's why I became a writer. I seldom go to sleep until 5 or 6 in the morning. I got tired of watching TV, so I started putting together my memoirs for something to do.
And so it goes - "KILL THE MESSENGER WHEN CAUGHT IN LIES."
These national archive records (DA1594 records) refute some dozen so-called nonfiction books by Kenn Miller, Gary Linderer and many others.
To top these matters off, Gary Linderer was busted for committing copyright infringemnet and his writing career is "FINISHED."

Good grief, Don. You must really be hard up if you're posting on this. Do you realize no one's even commented here since August?
Your "facts" are the same twisted, out-of-context lies that you've been using for literally ten years.
Gary Linderer was not "busted" for copyright infringement. Any twit can sue anyone for anything, which you proved with your frivolous lawsuits. That doesn't make it true. I find it amusing that you fail to mention all the other suits you've been involved with, or the long and illustrious list of people you threaten to sue on a daily basis, including me.
Gary Linderer's writing career is "finished," eh? Well, at least his started.
Why don't you get off the internet and go finish all the books you claim to be writing? God knows it'll take you some work to get all your lies straight. How will you explain the problems, factual errors, and inconsistencies in your own writing? And how about the changes in accusations against Linderer from year to year? You yourself don't even know what you're babbling about.
Go jump off a cliff or something. Better yet, go take your morphine and hallucinate somewhere.

Don Hall will discover at some point that he and Annette have reached the absolute end of their road and the absolute end of their credibility. The story of Don Hall's exit from the military--will seal their fate, and people wouldn't have been digging had they not carried on this irrational vendetta against Heidi and Kit. Unfortunately, they have dug the pit they're about to fall into, and frankly, I don't feel very bad about it.
A very well respected author told me about Don Hall that he doesn't want to be affiliated with him, but he feels bad for him, that he was terribly injured in Vietnam and never came all the way back from it.
I, however, am not as forgiving. These tactics they've used against Don's own Vietnam brothers are against everything this brotherhood stands for. Gary Linderer's brothers who fought at his side who are still alive--meet with him, share bread with him, have reunions with him, and they share a special bond of people who shared horrible experiences and memories that no one should ever had to deal with...yet they deal with them still, all of these years later.
People wonder why I am particularly interested--well there is an interesting crossover between the Jack Idema story I've been covering and the story of the 75th Rangers. And I have been enduring some of the same type of slanderous misguided character assassinations these girls have for simply reporting the truth. They don't deserve it. The story they managed to put together on this is incredible. And just think. Don Hall got exactly what he was asking for.
Be careful what you ask for...you just might get it!

Don? Did you even notice this post was from July, 2005?

Don, upon arising I received an electronic notification of a reaggravation of grievances that you seem to continually post against my esteemed colleagues at Euphoric reality, and I was most aggrieved to learn that your petit bon mots, peppered with your particular flavor of toro fedundis, were splayed across the electronic bulletin board of another of my colleagues and it gave rise instantly to the image of an inexpensive Saigon trollop being paid to pose reclined across the top of a dignitaries auto.
May I enquire as to whether the medical professionals at your disposal have increased your daily allowance of certain narcotics, and if so, did they give no warning as to the danger of your mind becoming siezed with delusions and hallucinations?
Mayhaps another hobby, aside from one that causes you to spew such continuing lies, fables and myths, is in order. To that end please have annette procur you one half kilo of silly putty and todays newspaper.
