Monuments To Heroes ~ A Photographic Celebration of Memorial Day
On this Memorial Day, a day when we honor our Fallen Heroes, I thought a brief representation of some of the Memorials from around the world would be a good place to start. If you live near one of these, please visit, take a moment of reflection on how our freedoms are directly tied to these heroes.
The USS Arizona Memorial
Arlington National Cemetery
The Bunker Hill Memorial
The Gettysburg National Cemetary
The Marine Corps Monument (AKA the Iwo Jima Memorial)
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The USS Constitution ~ The Oldest Commissioned Ship In the US Navy (AKA "Old Ironsides")
The Alamo
The WWII Veterans Memorial (The Pillars at Night)
The Bataan Memorial courtesy of Cao
The Mount Soledad Memorial also thanks to Cao of Caos Blog
There are hundreds of other monuments. If you have a favorite, send me a photograph, any height but only 450 pixels wide and I will add it to the post. Send the photograph as an insert to gmroper@gmroper.mu.nu along with a description of the Monument/Memorial.
UPDATE: Go see Social Sense for a terrific Memorial Day Post... Way to Go Mustang!

My uncle was killed in that battle.

I'm sure I'll field a couple of lefty anti-war comments this weekend. We are ALL anti-war. The sad truth is that left can't find a single American value to fight for.
To those who kept us safe and our country free, we can never repay you for your sacrifices. But please remember no matter bleak the media paints your struggles, we know the real truth.
America's values are worth fighting for.

GM, While I don't have good pictures to send, the following are also very worthy:
1. The cemetary just above Omaha Beach in Normandy.
2. The Punchbowl in Oahu.
3. The huge memorial in Bastonge, Belgium...paid for by the Belgians out of respect and gratitude.
4. The cemetary on Luxembourg (Patton and many others are buried there.
5. The cemetary at La Bois du Brigade de Marine aka Belleau Wood aka The Wood of the Marine Brigade (WW I), renamed by the French in gratitude for the American Marines ferocious battle at that location.

Tad, I'll see if I can find them and I'll get them up as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

Looking for a good picture of the Mt. Soledad Veterans' Memorial...that should be in here somewhere...and also the memorial to the Battling Bastards of Bataan...
This is a great idea, GM, but you're going to end up with more pictures than you can host, probably....!
Happy Memorial Day weekend!

There is one picture . . . of a very young Tad standing with several of his Marines from the Combined Action Platoon in Vietnam. . . that is worthy of your time if you can get a hold of it.
You will find that America's heroes were at every "climb and place" in our entire history. I know that it would be impossible to post them all at any site, but every single man and woman who served their country in uniform is worthy of our rememberance.
