Medical Update on G.M.

Norma Roper, G.M.'s wife, called today with an update on his medical status.

FightOn (3).gif There's not much new information at this point, but he is beginning to feel more pain as he comes out of the effect of the anesthesia. That's normal, but I know that he'll be clicking on the pump that administers pain medicine faster than he can change channels with the remote control. G.M. is discouraged in that he did not expect to wake up with his entire left lung removed. ( Who wouldn't be?) He also will have to start breathing exercises. But, I fully expect G.M. to fight to restore his health with the same fight that he took to fight the disease. It will be a few more days before we know if chemo treatment will be required.

Norma read your comments to G.M., and he enjoyed them and had some laughs. Please continue to pray for him and to share your thoughts so that G.M. can really experience how special all of you are.

GM, don't you be shy about clicking dem meds. If what I went through with my hernia operation (at age 40, lol) is even close to what you're riding through, well, that's why they made the dang blarm pain meds in the first place!

6 y.o. angel keeps remembering to pray for you at dinner and before bed. As so I. Live long and prosper, dudester! :D

Hang in there GM, you CAN fight this thing... You have a lotta folks praying and thinking of you man...

FIGHT ON GM!! Norma, BLESS YOU.

Praying for you and your family.
We're here for you. ANYTHING you need JUST CALL.

Based upon very limited interaction I feel as if I know GM quite a bit better than the limited interaction would normally imply.

Words simply cannot express the regret all of your loyal virtual friends have at this time.

I am sure that you will eventually beat this thing but in the meantime as MaryHunter said --- Don't be shy about pressing that med release button.

Lemons -- Lemonade and all that.

Wishing you a fast recovery and a minimum amount of discomfort.

George, We NEED intelligent, decent, savvy, moral folks that can counter the Left's nitwittery. You are right there in the top 1% of the folks that write so very well and do such a good job. Heck, I don't understand why you haven't gone national in syndication yet. Hey, I'm not kidding. Get well soon and mend in calmness. Later, you'll be back in the fray.

Semper Fi,

Fight On! Sir, Fight On!
God Bless you and your family.
oh, and hurry back.

It's OK, George: the first few days/weeks of recovery are the hardest (just ask my mom - knee replacement surgery, remember?), but this, too shall pass.

We're all rooting and praying for you, and like TMH and dougf said, USE those pain meds! Your body needs to heal, and it will be much more difficult if it also has to fight too much pain.

Take it a day at a time, and then you'll be able to look back and say, "Hey, I couldn't do that LAST week... but today, I CAN!"

As always, prayers, love and hugs to you and your family, especially your Lady Wife.

[grumbling to self]OK now, R'cat, get off your rear end and FINISH George's quilt, darn it!!!!

Love,

Everyone else has given such great advice Papa George. So I will skip that part and just let you know that you have been an inspiration to me and there is no way to describe the way I respect you. You are the Papa I never had and no one can replace. My heart is full of regret and angst at the thought of you losing the lung. But I am so relieved that you are going to be fine.
I can't wait until you get back to Lib thump'n. God bless you Papa.

Hi everyone,

I had a very interesting day at the hospital today. On Monday, my brother ( anesthesiologist and pain manager), a very good friend (surgical nurse) and myself (22 years as a clinical dietitian in a hospital setting) heard the surgeon say that George had a total right pneumonectomy. Several times the last two days George has stated that he had a right upper lobectomy. Today, we had had enough of the "misinformation" and demanded to see the chart. They let my brother read it and

Norma.....

Would it be an intrusion of privacy to know what hospital George is staying in? In order to send a personal card or flowers.

Posted by L.B. at February 8, 2006 09:48 PM

Norma, I'm sorry you had to go through a misinfomation mess -- but I'm so glad it was a mess that straightened up with better news than the initial report.

GM's Corner is the only nonfamily blog that is on my links list AND my husband's. Not that that's a huge honor, I know, but I thought GM would like to know.

My husband also has lung problems (in his case from scoliosis that's crushing them). My advice, for what it's worth, is that if the doctors tell you you can't get one of those thingy-bobs that clips on the end of a finger to read oxygen saturation levels, go out and buy one on the Internet. For whatever reason, everyone around here kept telling us that only hospitals and doctors had access to them. My husband has had great fun checking his own sats and thumbing his nose at the folks who told him he couldn't have his own oximeter. (Hey, you take what victories you can in situations like this, right?)

All our best. You're in our prayers.

George is currently in ICU 18 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital, 101 E. Ridge Road, McAllen, TX 78501. 956-632-6000. He can not receive phone calls yet due to his location in ICU. Norma B Roper

Norma,

Thank you for the information!

George had the epideral taken out today and is able to move his legs more. He developed a pneumothorax (a collapsed lung on the right side) overnight and had to stay in ICU one more day. Hopefully, tomorrow he will be in a regular room. He has also been consulted by a pulmonologist and oncologist. The plan is chemotherapy in about two weeks. More later.

Thanks for the updates Norma. Tell George I luv him and miss him. Tell him Mustang is being a pain and needs him BACK. LOL. Bless you.

Posted by Raven at February 9, 2006 09:51 PM

Yes, indeed, Norma! Thank you SO much for the updates. Don't forget, whenever you tell George we send love and hugs, YOU get love and hugs from us, too! Thanks for taking such good care of him, but don't forget to take a little time for yourself to recharge.

*Never* be afraid to grab those Doctors and make them explain and explain and explain. Yes, they're busy, and they've got other patients, but the more you know and understand, the better. I *do* have the docs and nurses on my prayer list, too, for wisdom, skill and compassion, so I hope God will give them His helping hand.

Much love, and many hugs!
