Bookworm Strikes Again

Bookworm has a delightful entry on Steyn, Englands contribution to conservative literature. I missed this one, spending too much time on the blogs I guess. (Hah, is that even possible?)

Bookworm, I owe you a debt of gratitude for the report, the heads up and most of all for your outlook on life.

Oh, and Steyn's tail end comments?

When Christians get hot and bothered about a horny Jesus (The Last Temptation of Christ), a gay Jesus (Terrence McNally’s Broadway play Corpus Christi), or a Jesus floating in the artist’s urine (Piss Christ), columnists take to the barricades to champion the cause of free speech. When Muslim groups closed down a play in Cleveland because its revolting apologia for a Palestinian suicide bomber was insufficiently pro-Muslim, the silence of the media lambs was deafening.

But somehow, when it’s the merest hint of a rumor of a canard about Bush stooges flushing the Koran down the toilet, Newsweek doesn’t bother thinking through the consequences. That’s the real problem here: not the reflex leftism but the pathetic hicky parochialism of a U.S. media unable to see things except through the tunnel vision of domestic partisan advantage. Who’s really the “culturally insensitive†ones here?

As The Glen would say: "Indeed!"

GM, is the Iskioff that he's angry at as 'anti-Bush' the same one that nearly brought down Clinton? And the one who bashed Michael Moore's F-911?
What an odd accusation to stick to ['anti-Bush'].

Also, there seems to be quite a bit of documentation that is pretty credible on the koran desecration business. on the other hand, the 'librul' media seems to do a good job basically underreporting the Tillman family's anger at the Bush adm. and military for lying outright and knowingly [something Newsweek has not even come close to doing]...And they even run the basic Bush adm. line about Newsweek's 'retraction'...
As far as I can see we have here a major capitalist information dissemination organ helping the Bush administration maintain its framing of the issues, be it in response to the Koran 'mistake' that wasn't really a mistake and the Tillman story. In fact, you'll recall Newsweek, the major capitalist disseminator of info. happily reproduced without question and without verification the Tillman lies for weeks on end. I don't think capitalism or empire is at all threatened by corporate media like Newsweek.

steve, is there a rule somewhere that says that just because Isikoff is perceived as being "anti-bush" by Steyn, that he can't be the same one that "nearly brought down Clinton?"

I don't get it, you argue a lot, here and in the past at Marc's blog that one mindset/bias/belief/behavior automatically disqualifies you from having another mindset/bias/belief/behavior.

Don't you have ANY conservative friends (besides me of course ;-) and if you do, does that disqualify you from being a liberal/progressive/socialist whatever you call yourself?

Newsweek does indeed have a "corporate structure" but that doesn't mean automatically that it is conservative. You do know don't you that Nader's group is a corporation? That MoveOn.org is a corporation? You do know that don't you? You aren't going to tell me that just because those are two corporations that they are conservative are you?

Cheers my friend. Study some logic sometime. ;-)

GM, yes, I'm aware that Nader runs a 'corporation', but it is quite different in size and influence over issues of American economy and empire [especially the latter--nor does it receive much support from major corporate businesses that I know of]. Newsweek of course is not only a corporation [and certainly you misread me if you believe what I was doing was making a blanket assertion of 'if corporate then evil--after all as you know I don't romanticise the small competitive stage of capitalism that ended some 110-120 years ago], it is a corporate media organ that has strong support from corporate advertisers and a generally good relationship with Republican and Democratic politicians. Thus the point that it is hardly anti-capitalist or anti-empire.

I'm not seeing any connection between what I said, however, and your response. The argument is that Iskioff is not, as he is painted now by many a rightwing blogger, 'anti-Bush' and that ideas about him are silly.
Now, if you want to say that he was anti-Clinton and anti-Bush, ok, i suppose that argument could be made, but then it takes away from the power of the belief that he or Newsweek are singularly motivated by an anti-Bush agenda. In fact, if that latter were true, Iskioff had a funny way of showing it by trashing Moore's movies.

More substantively, it's more and more apparent that the attempt to pretend that desecration of the Koran as part of torture/interrogation regimens by US military is hardly a 'canard'.
