Great comments from a variety of sources. Some pretty funny. What I found odd in yesterday's news was that we have so quickly moved to other things. We jump from what I consider a major political/social/cultural event (the first elections in Iraq) that (one hopes) will have very beneficial effects for all the Middle East and the world at large....to Michael Jackson! Gad! While I don't know if he is guilty of child abuse, I believe he should get a fair trial and either be set free, or (if found guilty) be forced to decamp to a venue considerably less gilt-edge than Neverland. I am pretty mean-spirited against any who abuse children...and please don't any confuse that with appropriate discipline and the demand by parents, teachers and society at large to require children and young adults to be civil and not uncivil. OK, I am getting long winded here. We did the Scott Peterson deal for a very long time. Now we are going to do Michael Jackson. Why? I saw gent who is head of "Celebrity Justice". Aren't we all supposed to have equal protection under the law? Do celebs get a different track? I am not being naive. I know lots of money buys platoons of lawyers. However, why does the press get sucked into this vortex of the banal? What is happening in South America? Lots...but the MSM isn't covering it. How about Africa? Again, lots. Again, very little coverage. I believe, in addition to the press making a buck from their "noble calling", maybe they ought spend less time on sensational soap opera type stuff and report the really important.
BTW, "they" say the Jackson's trial will take 6 months. I would wager it will be more. Why 6 months? How many witnessess need be called? How many "experts" on both sides? How may continuences? How many early recesses? This, and most trials, really ought be sped up. This won't cut down on the rights of the public or the accused....the secret here is that it will significant cut into those platoon of lawyer's fees. Is anyone going to notice how much this trial will cost the long suffering taxpayers?
