Now, I don't know about cowardice, he did well, at least in that time in Vietnam. I do think he deferred to his wife so the cowardice label may not stick in the present when an awful lot of us were hoping he would run for the presidency, or that GWB would toss Cheny out and put Powell in for VP, hell, or even Condi.Do you believe that Colin Powell would have endorsed a WHITE DEMOCRATIC Candidate for president? Me neither. Do you believe Colin Powell would not have run for president had he been WHITE? Me neither. Do you believe that Barack Obama would have offered Powell or any other black man who failed to endorse him a seat at the table? Me neither.
To be honest, I never liked the man. He struck me as a coward. Yes, he was a general but he let fear of assassination prevent him from running for the presidency and he betrayed those who gave him a seat at the table in ill timed books.
Well, the two man deserve each other. Honor, gratitude and loyalty are not values familiar to either of them. Throwing old friends under bus is a common sport for them. All we can hope is that the American people will see through the media hype and give them their just dessert. A defeat in the polls.
Disgusting.
Yet, up until now, Powell was not the darling of the left, but the asshole that lied and/or was duped by GWB into supporting the war and then only got the cojones to get out of the administration because he had an attack of conscience too little too late. (Yeah, the leftards do in fact tend to run on their sentences don't they?)
Powell says he endorses Obama because Obama is "Transformational." Oh Please! Because he is different, has yet to fill out how he intends to accomplish the "change" he talks about? Because he is a "different" kind of politician (read shyster, liar, socialist, misogynist, willing to toss anyone under the bus who doesn't meet his needs of the moment including a pastor of 20 years, a retired terrorist who is still a full fledged radical who thinks it cool to stand on the American Flag in an alley-way in Chicago? Because he hasn't done jack in terms of "healing" the racial divide except to call others racist? Because he supports attacks on a simple working man who questions his willingness to raise taxes? Because he ... ahhh crap! Because he is a racist himself? Transformational my ass! Powell is endorsing Obama because he is black! That's it, that's all it is and anyone who says otherwise hasn't a leg to stand on and is being intellectually dishonest.
So, here is where we stand. I have a few Leftish/socialist readers who delight in calling themselves progressives so I'll simplify it for them.

Update: AF Ticker has more and wonders what were Powell's 30 pieces of silver?

Maybe I was hasty, in saying it was the race card. Maybe it was just a stupid, self-interested, vacuous card. From IDB:
More seriousness might have been expected from former Secretary of State Powell. But on NBC's "Meet the Press," the four-star general described Obama as "a transformational figure" who "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities . . . has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president."
All this amounts to a string of vacuous catchphrases.
How can someone who served Ronald Reagan as he fought the Cold War, George H. W. Bush as he fought the Gulf War and George W. Bush as he fought the global war on terror support a man from leftist circles in Southside Chicago who has bragged, "I will slow our development of future combat systems" and who promises "direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions"?
Among Powell's rationales is his "difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court." Would he rather have another ACLU activist like Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the high court instead of a John Roberts or Samuel Alito?
Powell also took a cheap shot at McCain running mate Sarah Palin, whom he claimed isn't ready to be president. Truth is, Palin's qualifications outweigh those of Obama, who has never managed a small business, let alone the largest state of the Union.
The only credible conclusion, especially considering Powell's timing, calculated for maximum impact, is that this is petty payback to the Bush administration and the Republican Party for the president's refusal to take his advice on Iraq.

I certainly defend the right of Mr. Powell to support whomever he wants; just as I defend the right of Mr. Obama to associate with whomever he chooses. The only catch is that I will judge Mr. Powell, and Mr. Obama, on the decisions they make. In the end, no one cares what I think, and that is certainly true with respect to either of these men. Conversely, I don’t much care what they think, either. But Debbie (Right Truth) reminds us of a very large base of African-Americans who support John McCain . . . and I am only saddened that this message is hidden by (yeah, I know) the mainstream media.
Congressman Lewis relinquished his personal integrity for political expediency; apparently, so has General Powell. The world will not end, but it is indeed a sad end to the chapter on Powell’s veracity.
One short post-script: Have you noticed how Democrats are claiming they are not “socialists?” One this afternoon even made that claim, and immediately followed up with this statement: “What we need more of in this country is more regulation.” Now we have to conclude one of two things. Either Democrats are seriously under-educated, or they are living in denial. Well, I suppose both could be true.

I tried to send this to some of my friends but I have been blackballed by Charter as a spammer. It seems that one of my emails was forwarded and who knows how many times until it reached some Obamabot in NY by the name of Tom Hughes who took exception and sent a snerty email to me and signed it A John McCain supporter which anyone who read the thing could tell was a total lie. He must have taken an equally strong exception to my reply in which I informed him that I had spent 34 plus years defending his rights , even to be wrong. The following day I could no longer send multi address emails and then later the following day I could not even send single address emails.
Can you imagine how it will be with the Obamazombies surfing the web looking for negative remarks toward their savior and messiah ? Most of us here will be banned from blogsphere.
Now back to Powell. I asked the question on my blog about just how many pieces of silver did he receive for his Judas Kiss. He certainly performed a dishonorable deed to his friend McCain and to the country that he once chose to defend so strongly. I am totally disappointed in him and said as much.

The only reson Powell is stating his presidential pick FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER is because Obama is black. Period. I'm not ashamed to state such facts.

I still believe that Powell has alot to answer for and that his performance in front of the UN, where he distorted the record on Iraq "WMD's", which of course set the stage for the disastrous war on Iraq, has been a calamity of immense proportion, paid for with the blood of mainly Iraqi civilians and US soldiers. He has yet to really own up to this. That said m heart warmed when Powell said that being a muslim is no smear. Many muslims and arab americans have waited for the Obama campaign to go beyond saying that he is not a muslim and instead highlight the fact that the premise of the suggestion is itself racist. Powell stepped up and spoke to these issues planly, leaving more than a few tears in my eyes by the time her was done. Here's Powell
"Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That's not America. Is there something wrong with a seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she could be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion that he is a Muslim and might have an association with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America"

Ahmed, I do not believe that a man of Powell's other accomplishments would knowingly stand in front of the UN and lie. I do believe that he was given bad info and he, like so many other leaders and countries believed it. The left's continuous harping that he has "crimes to answer for" is just bull crap. But the left just can't let it go can they.
I agree with you, and with Powell regarding muslims in America for the most part. However your comment: "highlight the fact that the premise of the suggestion is itself racist." is just race hustling. Muslim is NOT a race, it is a religion and in parts of the world, a very hostile religion towards too many others.

Powell?! ANYWAY - - Powell has always been a Democrat has he not? No surprise here at all.
FROM LA LA LAND? Maybe . . .
Hmmm - I also believed that he was one of the first "screws" in the change of our country's goals in the overall "War on Terror." The cog who did not allow the "original" battle - "Desert Storm" to be completed in the first place?! Directly causing the "need" for yet another battle in Iraq.
It would have been interesting to be the "bug on the wall" listening to the "bleg" that probably took place to get him to step into the fray!
Yep - We're ALL "Nuts!"

Have you thought about the position in an Obama administration that Powell was offered in exchange for his support, especially at this time? Is this Obama's jobs program?
Posted by: Woody at Monday, October 20 2008 07:16 AM (Eb/8J)
Well, Ropes, there were plenty of folks at the time who did not buy into the "false intelligence" the Bush administration was pushing and I believe Powell mjust have known better but acted against his own conscience. The desire to go into Iraq predated 9/11 and we know know that the "evidence" was cooked up in order to suit the wishes of the neocons who were pushing for the invasion. There were lots of folks on the international scene who did not believe Powell's testimony at the UN, I was one of them and I wrote that at the time.
Speaking as an arab american and a muslim, I cried when I heard Powell denounce the premise of the "Obama is muslim smear". Yes, Islam is not a race but the very fact that the "Obama is a secret muslim" thing acts as a smear and that people promote it, suggests that at this juncture of history the "muslim" identity becomes racialised and villified. It's like the woman who says to McCan that Obama is Arab, she is evoking the same fear. That this fear has been faned by those on the right, who is disgusting. Powell came out and said what I've been waiting for. It was a bold and corageous act.

I wonder what Woody and Gmroper would be saying about Colin Powell if he had endorsed McCain?
Let me take a guess......
Great Military Leader, One of the Best Secretary of State, understands the war on terrorism and would never support Obama, a man who served his country honorably under many administrations, see how an educated "negro" won't vote for a radical like Obama.
In the words of Matt Damon - how you like them apples.

Also, here's a very smart comment made by someone over at coopers
"The Powell endorsement leaves the right wing slimers more than a little off kilter. How can one continue the implication that Obama is some kind of dangerous terrorist-sympathizer when he has the support of the most prominent military figure in American life? Oh, and he’s a Republican to boot. Not a lot of good reasons for why Powell might support some kind of anti-American socialist. Either Obama fooled him - not a terribly convincing line of argument about a Republican Secretary of State - or, as Woody tosses out, he’s more interested in voting based on skin color than policy and loyalty to America. Of course the third option - that both candidates are well within the mainstream of American politics and Powell picked his preferred choice is what grownups understand to be the truth. And poor McCain will have to stick to that line between his breathless accusations of “Ayers!” and “Socialist!”

Does this mean that Joe Lieberman is playing the race card too, since he's a white man supporting another white man?
And is voting for someone because they're "hot" any better than voting for someone based on their skin color or gender?
You've got some things to think about, kiddos.

The only reason Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama is because he’s a racist, or, at the very least, because they’re both soul brothers. After all, even though Powell served in the administration of someone who was totally inexperienced, he had never before endorsed an inexperienced liberal.

And you do realize that several other prominent Republican figures have come out in support of Obama as well, including Christopher Buckley, Michael Smerconish and Ken Adelman. Buckley is the son of the great intellectual conservative William F. Buckley. Smerconish is a talk-radio host. Adelman campaigned for Goldwater, was hired by Rumsfeld at the Office of Economic Opportunity under Nixon, was assistant to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld under Ford, served as Reagan’s director of arms control, and joined the Defense Policy Board for Rumsfeld’s second go-round at the Pentagon in 2001.
Since all these men are white, we can't pull the race card. So what knee-jerk reductionist explanation will we give to these men's actions? SURELY they can't like Obama on POLICY! THE WONDER.

James Joyner, a conservative who blogs at Outside the Beltway, thinks Adelman’s announcement is significant. “While Colin Powell, Lincoln Chaffee, Susan Eisenhower, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, Jim Leach, Richard Riordan, Bill Ruckelshaus, and others can be dismissed as outside the conservative movement, Adelman can not,” Joyner writes. “Perhaps, at some point, people will take these complaints about McCain and the direction of the party seriously rather than as an excuse for character assassination.”

Allison is arguing brilliantly, I must say. The sad reality seems to be that even Colin Powell, who after all served under a man and party Roper supported, is at the end of the day seen by GM, Woody and others as nothing more that another black guy. Sad

Isn't the term "another black guy," which we haven't used, better than the liberal term of Colin Powll as a "house Negro" and worse, which they have used?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The fight over the debt ceiling has turned into a dramatic custom t-shirts leadership test for President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, opponents in a divided government who've gone from negotiating in secret to facing off in public at a watershed moment for the country and their own political careers.
