Earlier General Wesley Clark, retired and former candidate for President made some remarks about who might be qualified for president.Of course, everybody knows that Clark was being a surrogate for Obama and Obama’s attempts to lessen the allure of John McCain’s military service since Obama has none. But Clark seems to have stepped over the line when he said “I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.” That raises an interesting question:What would Clark have said about the military and other exploits of other presidents?
Wesley Clark on George Washington: "I don’t think crossing the Delaware River standing up in a boat in the middle of winter qualifies Washington to be president.”
Wesley Clark on John Adams:“I don’t think being a diplomat in France and Holland during our bloody revolution qualifies Adams to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Thomas Jefferson:“I don’t think writing the Declaration of Independence qualifies Jefferson to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Abraham Lincoln:“I don’t think splitting logs in Illinois qualifies Lincoln to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Ulysses Grant:“I don’t think accepting Lee’s Sword at Appomattox qualifies Grant to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Teddy Roosevelt:“I don’t think riding up San Juan Hill with a bunch of washed out cowboys qualifies Roosevelt to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Franklin Roosevelt:“I don’t think getting polio and riding around in a wheel chair qualifies Roosevelt to be president.”
Wesley Clark on Ike Eisenhower:“I don’t think sitting on a battleship while our brave soldiers invaded Normandy qualifies Eisenhower to be president.”
Wesley Clark on John Kennedy:“I don’t think letting a Japanese Destroyer ram your PT boat, sinking it, qualifies Kennedy to be president.”
Clark seems to have thought that having no substantial experience qualifies Obama to be president, and certainly he thought that being the fired military commander of NATO qualified him to be president.

Jeff Jacoby flat out nails, eviscerates and otherwise flays Obama's flip-flop on gun possession and rights to the same.
As a candidate for the Illinois Legislature in the 1990s, Obama had supported legislation to "ban the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns," so it wasn't surprising that he endorsed the gun ban being challenged in Heller while campaigning for president. In November, for example, his campaign told the Chicago Tribune that "Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional." In February, when a questioner during a televised forum said, "You support the D.C. handgun ban," Obama readily agreed: "Right."[emphasis added]
Obama now says he believes in the right to keep and bear arms. As Obama himsself said Riiiight!

It is important that you attach your Halloween Custom Wigs in such a way that it looks completely natural. It can be done but it may take a little practice. There are some tricks to be learned though but once you learn them, proper application of your full lace wig is a cinch.
Most wig application tapes come in precut strips to make using them more convenient to use. However; if the tape that you are using isn't precut, you are going to have to cut some strips to fit your scalp. It's pre-bonded tape that is sticky on both sides, so it will adhere to both your head and the Short Hair Wig Manufacturers.
Cut a good number of strips and stick them to your scalp above your natural hairline in such a way that the entire perimeter of your scalp is covered evenly. After this is done then you are ready to begin attaching your Excellent Medium Length Wigs.

Gen. Wesley Clark showed that his experience, military or otherwise, has not qualified him to be a good judge of Presidential candidates.
Gen. Wesley Clark, acting as a surrogate for Barack Obama's campaign, ...said that McCain lacked the executive experience necessary to be president, calling him “untested and untried” on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.”
I suppose that Welsey Clark thinks that Sen. Obama's vast experience in the military and as a Senator qualifies him to be President. This guy is a hero to the left? Associating with the left must make one unable to think logically.

I suspect that all of you are aware that there are fools in this world. Sometimes those fools rise to positions of power and prestige, sometimes by outrageous fortune, those fools come to represent all that we hold dear, trash it and then we wonder what the hell happened.
And so it was with the presidency of Jimmy Carter. In 1976 Jimmy was elected president largely on the anger of America at Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon who trashed the office of the Presidency and resigned in disgrace just ahead of impeachment.
Jimmy ran against the hapless Gerald Ford, a good man, an honest man but one who was portrayed as a bumbling fool. His slip on the stairs of Air Force One didn't help, nor did the ongoing "joke" of the antics of the SNL crew in general and Chevy Chase in particular.
None the less, in retrospect America knew that it had elected the wrong man in '76 and opted to toss the bozo from Georgia out on his keister in '80 in favor of "The Great Communicator" Ronald Reagan. Now, lest we be accused of being partisan (which of course we are) let us also acknowledge that a big reason for dumping Carter was less than that he was a fool, as much as it was for his total mismanagement of the economy and of the Iranian hostage crisis in which the Iranian "students" rubbed the face of America in the dirt for 444 days releasing them only when Reagan took office. Since that time, the bad peanut farmer and former president has made an ass of himself traveling the world in support of thugs and murderers.
Now Jackass Jimmy is set to talk to Hamas thinking that this will settle peace between Israel and the Pali's. See, he is still blinded by his own incompetence. The United States has a policy of not dealing with terrorists. Every time that policy has been violated, we have ended up with the short end of the stick and sometimes our brave men and women in uniform have paid the price. Sometimes, when we don't take terrorists seriously we end up with things like the Marine Barracks bombing, the U.S.S. Cole disaster and 9/11. Yet, there goes bumbling Jimmy Jackass who has yet to learn that Hamas are a bunch of murderous thugs who launch rockets against civilians, murder and pillage, and trow prisoners off of tall buildings.
Yeah Jimmy, that's the ticket. In this most recent proof that Jackass Jimmy is a fool, he stated:
"I feel quite at ease in doing this, I think there's no doubt in any one's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process."
[...]
"I think that it's very important that at least someone meet with the Hamas leaders to express their views, to ascertain what flexibility they have, to try to induce them to stop all attacks against innocent civilians in Israel and to cooperate with the Fatah as a group that unites the Palestinians, maybe to get them to agree to a cease-fire — things of this kind."
Oh Jimmy, have you gone completely soft between the ears? Oh, wait, that was a rhetorical question wasn't it?
So, for this month's Dimwitted Dodo Award may I present Jackass Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States (and thank God he's not any more).
1
I don't think Jimmah is stupid and incompetent--or not only stupid and incompetent. He's malevolent, too. He has tried to conduct his own foreign policy since he left the White House, and probably should have been jailed for treason.
I bet even his peanuts are crooked.

Yeah, because we all know how well Jimmy's "talks" have gone thus far. All his "talks" with the Palestinians; his handling of Iran as well. He still doesn't understand the absolute farce he created with his endorsement of Venezuelan elections. And let us not forget his meddling in North Korea during the Clinton presidency and subsequent chumming with Castro. So far, he's batting zero. Yet still, he persists. I'm beginning to think that he continues on this path because he genuinely enjoys the praise he receives from America's enemies. I believe he shares their disdain of his country.

And to be honest, no one seems to give a damn! Oh sure, lots of people [lots... you gotta be kidding... only 10...--ed. --ahhh, shuddup] wanted to be in my cabinet, but no one set up funding mechanism, no one contributed a dime and then I realized - - don't have a solid resume that I can lie about.
So, let me tell you why I'm executive material: You see, it's like this, in 1970 I entered the army and was headed for Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga. I finished my tour and was shipped overseas to Vietnam where in no time flat, I was assigned to clean out a vipers nest of Viet Cong and NVA in the Central Highlands. In fact, it was the same area that my dad was assigned to when he was a Lt. Col. in 1961-62. When I arrived, the fire base that I would call home for the next 24 months (I extended my tour) was under attack by the combined forces of two battalions of V.C. and 4 of the NVA. Our Helicopter was hit in the tail rotor and we spiraled down into a hard landing. I jumped out of the bird and immediately picked up an M-60 and began blasting away at the enemy. No time for any greeting parties in that hot zone.
As I was saying, with my overheated M-60 and several thousand rounds of ammo in belts around my torso, I marched forward against the enemy. The motto of the Infantry School is "Follow Me!" and so the defenders of the fire base did. We marched into hell killing thousands of VC and NVA in the process.
Just as we thought that the battle was won and just as I shot the last round of ammunition and killed the last VC, a grenade was tossed by a dieing NVA Major. I saw that the Grenade was going to kill a FNG private who was on the copter with me so I jumped on the grenade and smothered the blast with my body. I was killed immediately and awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
Oh-oh, I just re-read the above, I must have been exhausted from typing and misspoke, I actually spent my entire Army career at Fort Polk, La. and Fort Benning, Ga. and never left the country. But if Hillary can misspoke and Obama can misspoke, Hell you won't mind a little embellishment from me will you? Nah, I didn't think so.
UPDATE: Hey Hillary, Misspeaking involves something like calling someone George instead of Greg. It does NOT involve making up a tale out of whole cloth!

I can vouch for GM on this one and not because he promised to select me as his running mate.
I
was In VN in 1970. Though only 9 years old, I lied about my age and was
accepted in the Army. I trained at Special Forces school and then
learned to drink beer from some young REMF pilot named Bush.
I
deployed to VN and was on the chopper with GM when we had that hard
landing. I was nearly killed when some guy named Cleland picked up a
grenade that was on the ground and blew his legs and one arm off.
I
lost a lot of my hearing because of that but I could see GM in front
and I read his lips as he said "come on you Mother F***ers, it is time
to get down and dirty. Stop lolly gagging and get your A$$es up here
and fight like men. We are not going to allow a chopper crash and
overwhelming forces to beat us."
I was captured fighting that
day and spent time in a cell with some Navy twit named McCain. He kept
talking about how his daddy was an Admiral blah, blah. GM organized a
rescue party and rappelled into the prison camp and killed all the
guards. He carried me 2 miles on his back (with my gear and his) and
shot VC soldiers along the way. He offered to help McCain out but he
said that he liked it there because it was quiet.
I recovered in
Da Nang with some guys named Forrest Gump and LT. Dan. Those guys were
a riot. Then the Army found out my real age and said that I had to go
home. GM fought to keep me in the unit but it did not work so I had to
go home and go back to school. The flight home was terrible. Some guy
named Kerry kept saying he was JFK and going to be president some day.
He kept saying "I was in Vietnam you know" the whole way home. He
asked me to join some group of war protesters but I kicked his rear
around the plane and told him to sit down and shut up.
I owe my life to GM and will never forget his can do attitude and bravery under fire.
That is my story and I am sticking to it....

Rambo is a wuss, and I too can vouch for GM and Ogre's tales, as I was working at the Pentagon during those years running the sooper sekret campaign running drugs from cambodia and laos and us boys in the office used to pass around GM's reports as entertainment. IN fact that guy that made Rambo worked with us too, and he toned down GM's reports and made that rambo movie......anyway I think GM would be a great president.....
So I wholeheartedly endorse GM for President, and not because he has said I can be Secretary of Vice (you should go with what you know....ya know?)

That's all you've got, Big Dog? Not only was I under heavy sniper fire, I didn't even have an airplane of any sort to watch my back! In retrospect, I was playing Russian roulette with six bullets...but I only had one in my gun, the trigger of which didn't work. So, thanks to my mad fighting skills developed scant years before with my three brothers (I, too, lied about my age and enlisted at age 10), I thought quickly, ducked for cover in the barren landscape of napalmed Vietnam, bent the gun into a boomerang, and threw it at the nearest enemy soldier. They fell like ninepins, all 28 of them. I moved on to the next company, but Big Dog et al. had already taken care of them.
(raises eyebrows pugnaciously) Are you so sure now that Big Dog is the right candidate for VP? huh? huh?

This whole thing reminds me of when I went up San Juan Hill with Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. There we were, in our flippers and propeller hats facing 6 to the power of quod enemy snipers. Luckily I'd brought my Captain Kangaroo badge and well, you know the rest.
I was never prouder than when Teddy tearfully said to me "Cut those damn onions somewhere else or I'll bust you down to latrine Marshall!"

ScrewballSpeaker Nancy Pelosi stated that Dick Cheny's comment was "beneath the dignity of his office.”
Cheney's comment was "They are not carrying the big sticks I would have expected.” speaking of the poor performance of the Democrats after taking control in January.
If, after all the things that Reid and Pelosi and other Dem politico's have said, Pelosi thinks that is undignified, I'd hate to see what she considers scathing. An example:
"I believe that the president's leadership in the actions taken in Iraq demonstrate an incompetence in terms of knowledge, judgment and experience in making the decisions ..." Nancy Pelosi 5/20/2004

Telling It Like It Really Is - A New Way To Treat With Heads Of State
Juan Carlos, King of Spain had the right idea. During a meeting of Hispanic Honchos, Hugo Chavez, Bully Boy of Carracas was lambasting Aznar of Spain. Juan Carlos, bless his pea pickin' heart told El gallito de pelea de Caracas (the fighting cock of Caracas - an insult because it implies a chicken) to Shut Up! Not only did Juan Carlos say shut up, but he used the familiar "tu." Another insult.
So, recently, there was another exchange between the United States State Department and a foreign ambassador in which the US Deputy Assistant Secretary Craig Kelly at the State Department called in the Bolivian Ambassador Gustavo Guzman in to essentially tell Evo Morales, President of Bolivia to knock off making allegations against US Ambassador Phillip Goldberg.
Morales, a leftist Chavez wannabe has been making scurrilious comments about Goldberg and we, the US that is essentially said "Knock it off turkey."
What a delightful turn of events. I can foresee a new diplomatic way of life:
From: US Embassy
To: President Putin, Russia
Listen Puttie-pa-toot, we are getting sick and tired of your bullying and posturing in Russia. You aren't the Soviet Union any more, you are broke and a pitiful excuse for a human being. So stop it before we have to squash you like the cockroach you are.
From: US Ambassador to the United Nations
To: The United Nations Human Rights Commission
My dear sirs, you have no idea what the hell you are doing. None of you little creeps gives a damn about human rights or about security or taking care of the people in your piss-ant little countries. You are a disgrace to the diplomatic field and all you want to do is rale against the United States and Israel. Well, I've got news for you, you bunch of high falutin' excuses for statesmen and women, if you don't start acting in the best interests of all of the world and not your petty tyrannies, The US is going to cut your funds off and push your silly little organization into the ocean. You creeps can go to hell for all we care. Get with the program.
From: George W. Bush, President of the United States of America
To: Mahmoud Amerdinerjad or however the hell you spell it, President of Iran
Listen Mahmoud, you little hitler wannabe, I've about had it with your posturing, your shipping arms and explosive devices to Iraqi insurgents and Al Qaeda types. I've had it with you thinking you have the right to join the nuklear (or however you spell it) club, I've had it with your treatment of Israel, Jews, homosexuals and women. I'm telling you now, either get with a human rights program or go watch the God Father... especially the part about the Movie Producer. Get me scumbag?

Mussolini Chavez Tries For "President for Life" In Venezuela
......................Father and Son?......
He stood at the edge of the balcony, jaw out-thrust, glaring at the crowds, looking like the pugnacious tyrant that he was. Raising his hand in a fascist like salute he roared out to the crowd that he was the leader, that the legislature had granted him, or soon would if they knew what was good for them, the leadership of the country for as long as he wanted. Or at any rate, long after the current law allowed. This was to make sure that all of the people, all of the businesses had a chance to change from a formerly fairly backwards society to the modern imperial democracy that the people deserved and wanted. Benito Mussolini? No, Hugo Chavez, dictator of Venezuela, not that there is a whole lot of difference between them.
CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez called for changes to Venezuela's constitution Wednesday night, delivering a key address pitching reforms that are expected to allow him to be re-elected indefinitely. [emphasis added]
The National Assembly, completely under the thumb of Chavez's supporters and sycophants, is expected to give Chavez what he wants. Chavez stated:
They accuse me of making plans to be in power forever or to concentrate power. We know it isn't like that. It's power of the people," Chavez said. "So many lies in the world. I doubt there is any country on this planet with a democracy more alive than the one we enjoy in Venezuela today."
What really amazes me, not that this petty tyrant is trying to grab power (hell, he already has) is that there is not a bigger outcry in this country.
To be sure, I'm not advocating invasion or wresting control of Venezuela via a US sponsored coup (we screwed up in a similar situation with Allende in the 70's) but no outcry at all? Where are the democracy supporters in this country? I hear bloggers on the right decrying this thug. I hear a few on the left doing the same, but overall? I'm surprised that as far as I can tell, Jimmy Carter (who oh so sickeningly proclaimed Chavez's last election fair and above-board) hasn't said a word.
It will be interesting to watch and see if the MSM picks up on this. Oh sure, the WSJ has, so has The Guardian and USA Today. But where are the others? The New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post, LA Times? As of this posting, they haven't even picked up the AP wire-story as far as I can tell. Perhaps they aren't interested or perhaps they secretly want to see this thug sticking it to Bush directly and the United States indirectly
The State Department wants to wait to see what the "proposals" are before commenting.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Wednesday that the U.S. would wait for details of Chávez's proposal before commenting on it. He added that Chávez in the past "has taken a number of different steps…that have really eroded some of the underpinnings of democracy in Venezuela."
Why wait, if the folk in the State Department don't know what is going down in Venezuela by now, they need to be fired! Nuts, even a 12 year old with a modicum amount of interest in South and Central America should be able to see what is going on down there.
1
OK, I will not mention all the other really awful dictators that Carter, Hollywood and academia seem to think are really neat guys. Let's just go with Hugo Chavez.
If the Liberal-Left think Bush is a fascist/imperialist who is the enemy of freedom. What is Chavez?
As listed above, Chavez wants to rewrite his country's consititution so he can stay in power PAST 2012. Uh, President-for-Life is the title he's looking for, or so it seems to me.
He has shut down nearly all opposition newspapers and tv. He has fired military officers and inserted those loyal to him. He has fired judges and packed the courts.....and not through a legislature that is hostile....the legislature is also packed with his cronies.
In the NYT yesterday, Chavez announced he is for the five HOUR work day.
He masks himself as the saviour of the poor and oppressed. Didn't Mussolini do the same thing? Isn't he a demagogue in the truist sense?
He is nationalizing foreign investments (that is a nice word for stealing). He is pumping up his military with all sorts of weaponry (former soviet aircraft, submarines, and hundreds of thousands AK-47s or AKMs). Why?
Does he really expect the USA to land on his shores? Is he really a source for peace in the hemisphere? If he cares about his people, why doesn't he vector most of those dollars into helping his countryman...and skip the harangues and the token "show-ups" and photo ops in the poorest sections of Caracas?
The poor, sadly, are easily led by cheap stunts and bravado scape-goating. Venezuela has been awash in oil for as long as I can remember. I was there in the 1970s. This isn't a poor country. This is a country that doesn't really educate itself and the few keep nearly all the loot. Now, one man, claiming to be the saviour of the poor is really another really awful dictator.
I could be wrong.
Mr. Penn, doubtless much, much brighter than I, will inform us in the days ahead. Or not.

As with many dictators in the last 100 years he was elected to office. Now term limits are one thing Soviet style elections are another, and this is what should be watched for.
Many conservatives dislike Chavez because he consistently thumbs his nose at Bushco and the US.
The world community is allowed to dislike us, they are allowed not to do business with us, they are allowed their opinion of us. To say differently is antithetical to American belief.
Are we so worried that he is going to over run South America? Ha! Until we start treating those south of our border with more respect we will continue to see these pocket dictators come and go.

psyberwolfe: Please give specifics as to what exactly we ought to do in terms of giving those south of the border more respect.....that we are not already doing.
Further, please justify why those countries, most with massive amounts of natural resources, have done little to advance their nations in the past 300 years.
Indeed, why do so many people of Latin America flee? Note: I am NOT speaking of just Mexico.
Further Note: Some of the very best people I ever served with were hispanic. Nope, not a bigot when it comes to indivduals. I am, however, disgusted with oligarchies, dictatorships, rampant corruption that seems the norm "down south".
OK, having said all that, I know we - in the USA - have plenty of faults of our own. Plenty. Way too many. We do not, however, routinuely have coups and treat our citizenry in an awful manner. Even the least of us can aspire to, and achieve great success in the USA.

Well lets see maybe we could stop using them as slave labor (read underpaid for the profits the American corporations earn from their cheap labor.)
Further, please justify why those countries, most with massive amounts of natural resources, have done little to advance their nations in the past 300 years.
Huh? Not germain to the conversation.

I rather think if the countries that lie to our south were run much better, their own citizenry would not come north and be used by anyone.
Do people or countries deserve respect if they really treat their own people so terribly bad? The natural resource issue in play here is that those countries are NOT without resources....they are just kept by very few....they do not have middle classes....of the size that the USA does. I would, of course, concede that Chile is one noteable exception. Others have potential, but have taken centuries to move not much. Thus, "men on horseback" take over. Too many coups and not nearly enough education.
Posted by: tad at Thursday, August 16 2007 04:24 PM (aV+Sn)
You mention, “Until we start treating those south of our border with more respect we will continue to see these pocket dictators come and go.” As if the policies of the US towards its neighbors to the South are responsible for that region’s tendency toward despotism.
So, according to this logic then, dictators arise as a result of America treating countries and their governments without respect. Therefore, by treating countries with respect, good government will arise.
I assume this logic -- no respect leading to despotism -- can be applied throughout history and all regions of the earth. For it would be inconsistent to say that only the US should treat other countries with respect and other countries do not.
Historical analysis, however, will expose this as rather simplistic and a canard.
For example, did fascism arise in Italy after WWI because Italy was treated without respect? No, she was on the winning side in the war. Italy, however, had its own problems most of which were internal.
Did militarism arise in Japan in the early 20th century because she was treated without respect? No, she was given possession of the German colonies after WWI and supported in her aspirations in the Far East by several European countries.
Did totalitarianism arise in Russia in the early 20th century because she was treated without respect? No, foreign and domestic policy incompetence, military defeats, and an energetic Bolshevism brought about dictatorial communism.
Did dictatorship arise in Germany after WWI because she was treated without respect? There is some relevance here. But the Weimer Republic was encouraged and supported by the Western powers. It was the worldwide depression and the governing incompetence of the regime that brought it to its knees.
Did dictatorships arise in Latin America because she was treated without respect? Again there is some relevance here, but numerous regimes became left-wing dictatorships with the encouragement of the success of Castro’s regime in Cuba, The prevailing climate of the cold war also precipitated the emergence of right-wing regimes.
The point here is that countries have their own agenda and to ascribe the fate of a country solely to its neighbors’ treatment of it, is to deny the importance of indigenous factors on the character of a country.
Cheers,
Lawrence H.

What Could Be Worse Than Bush?
When polls don't count to the Left:
Zogby Poll: August 01, 2007 - Just 24% give the president favorable ratings of his performance in handling the war in Iraq, but confidence in Congress is significantly worse – only 3% give Congress positive marks for how it has handled the war.
1
Interestingly, the numbers for military, and military connected, are only different from the population as a whole in degree. Much of the military and "military-connected" has diminished confidence in Bush, some none at all. I treat their opinion as somewhat more informed, as the reflexively anti-military are removed from the pool, and there is increased understanding that complicated events are complicated - a tautology often overlooked back home.
The solutions approved by the military (and connected) show more support for timelines and conditions than I would have expected, though less than the population as a whole.
The current oversimplified conventional wisdom is that "we have more confidence in a military success, less confidence that the Iraqis can form a stable government." I very tentatively assent to that, while recognizing that I am an expert at judging neither.

But Woody, remember that until this year, the congress that has such an abysmal rating has been the congress that people like you have elected.
Lets see, how does this work? continue to do the same idiocies, and expect different results?
Paul Krugman had it right this morning, when he exposed the core philosophy of the Bush/Republicanism.
Just as in 1994 when William Kristol warned against the passage of the Clinton Health care plan, "in any form," because its success would signal the rebirth of centralized, welfare-state policy at the very moment that such policy is being perceived as a failure in other areas.
Perceived being the operative word.

Wow. THREE percent? Now that's LOW. I would think a random poll would end up with more than 3% of people connected to politicians -- so even the politicians themselves must think they're doing a bad job.
Can we just fire every last one of them and start over? Picking random people off the street would probably get a higher rating than THREE percent!

Pitiful, Just Pitiful!
After an all night debate, Senate Republicans have successfully blocked an effort by the Democratic leadership from removing U.S. Troops from Iraq by the end of April 2008. The final vote on the cloture issue was 52 TO 47 with only 4 Republicans supporting the measure: Sens. Gordon Smith of Oregon, Olympia Snowe of Maine and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and joining these three was Sen. Susan Collins also of Maine who is up for re-election next year.
The Republicans in the Senate (and elsewhere) have stated that this was a useless political stunt by the Democrats who continue to harp on an issue that they do not have the power to change. But, I disagree, the move by the Democrats has two purposes, one of which is not intended, but more about that later. The primary purpose of this "useless" debate is to sway public opinion for a period of time long enough so that the Republicans will eventually "give up" and support the Dems in their efforts to be the de facto "Commander in Chief." And, if the Republicans are as spineless as they have been in the past, it might just work.
The other purpose that I alluded to above is that this really does show how the Democrats are less interested in solving this issue (pull out vs. come up with a real plan to win the war against the Islamofascist elements of Islam) than in giving in to a mistaken interpretation of the mandate of the last election. The Democrats truly believe that they were elected to get us out of Iraq, but the reality is that it was more a vote against entrenched Republican spend-a-holics who had the taint (real and imagined) of corruption. That the Democrats in congress are equally corrupt, if not decidedly more so, does not seem to have entered the minds of the electorate. And, I have to hand it to the Dems, they did a masterful job of painting the Republicans as do nothing but spend, hand money over to corrupt lobbyist like Jack Abramoff and pseudo-pedophiles like the congressman from Florida.
Be that as it may, Republicans voted Dem in a fairly large number of places electing an awful lot of Blue Dog Democrats to replace Republicans, but the truth of the matter is that those individuals are going to be "at risk" come the next election and if the Democrats continue to play their silly little games they will loose out in the Senate as well. And, don't think America doesn't remember and think about comments from idiots like Harry Reid (D. Nevada) stating that the war will equal votes for Democrats.
In fact, I think I just may encourage Democrats to keep on doing what they are doing. It will just prove how insane the current Democrat leadership is; the definition of insanity being "To keep doing the same thing expecting a different result."
1The definition of insanity being "To keep doing the same thing expecting a different result."
I look at what's going on in Iraq and say the same thing... except, of course, I'm referring to Republicans.

But Moose, it only works if you are talking about War. Several different approaches have been tried, the most recent called the surge, which seems to be working. That is hardly doing the same thing, and there are indeed, at least so far, different results.
Now, take a look at the anti-war bills the house and senate have tried to pass under Democrat Party leadership. All basically the same thing with the same result - going down to defeat and the single attempt that they could pass was defeated via a veto and they couldn't override that.
Same thing? Not even close.

I am ever so glad that you posted on this asinine non-event.
You know that Churchill once said that " democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried'. The more I see of the ongoing farce that 'politics' has become, the more convinced I am that we just have not been trying hard enough on the 'alternative' front. This is just ghastly.
Supposedly a people get the government they deserve ---methinks someone has collected some very bad Karma somewhere down the line. Very very very bad Karma.
But that is not why I really appreciate this posting. It gives me a chance to now relay this little gem from the Washington Post. As much as I usually HATE the media, I salute the writer of this article without reservations. And it's Dana Milbank so imagine my surprise.

It is just sad that the lives of kids in the military have become little more than political football. Rather than debate ideas, both sides just vote along party lines and claim moral victories. Kinky Friedman was right, the Democrats and Republicans are the same guy looking at himself in the mirror. We need an independent. The current two-party system no longer works.

8moose, exactly what would be wrong about continuing in Iraq? What do we lose by staying?
If we stay we just stoke the fire as our presence in Iraq is Al-Qaida's best recruiting tool and also we risk war engulfing the entire Middle East. I know many of you would love for us to open up a big ol' can of "Whoop-Ass" on Iran but, trust me, that's really not a great idea at the moment. Unless a draft and paying $120 a barrel for oil seems like a good idea to you. And dead people... a lot of dead people. If you like dead bodies then, yeah, war with Iran seems like a great idea.

Democrats Trim Budget Buster
Congressional Democrats have taken a magnifying glass to the federal budget and found the one, yes, the one agency that represents government waste and needs its funding cut. Any guesses as to what that agency does?
The new Democratic Congress has finally found a government agency whose budget It wants to cut: an obscure Labor Department office that monitors the compliance of unions with federal law.
In the past six years, the Office of Labor Management Standards, or OLMS, has helped secure the convictions of 775 corrupt union officials and court-ordered restitution to union members of over $70 million in dues. The House is set to vote Thursday on a proposal to chop 20% from the OLMS budget. Every other Labor Department enforcement agency is due for a budget increase, and overall the Congress has added $935 million to the Bush administration's budget request for Labor. The only office the Democrats want to cut back is the one engaged in union oversight.
...OLMS, the Labor office that watches over union disclosure forms, says that last year 93% of unions met its reporting requirements. But the other 7% deserve scrutiny. Union members deserve to know how their dues are spent. They might want to know that in 2005, the National Education Association gave more than $65 million to Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and dozens of other liberal advocacy groups that have nothing to do with the interests of teachers. In 2006, 49 individuals employed at the national AFL-CIO headquarters were paid more than $130,000. "Union members are also discovering the extent to which their dues money is funding lavish trips for union officials to luxury resorts and other expensive perks unrelated to collective bargaining," says Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. ....

Out of all the cheap dual saw, it's the dual compound sliding saw that's among the best. These can supply for that typical cuts, but they are able to be tilted in either direction. They are also able to more forward as the wood is cut. They may be moved from site to site with ease and it can provide you with a professional look for work or home projects.
There are other things like radial arm and the dual saw which you can use for work or play. You will notice that they are able to do a variety of cutes, even crosscutting. You will need to keep in mind that some of these tools can be very expensive, however, you have to decide just what you need the job down, and what features you can afford to invest in.

The President has commuted Scooter Libby's prison sentence. And already the howls are coming up from our own homegrown Reidie Rage Boy™. Reid began howling and pontificating within seconds of the announcement that Libbys 30 month prison sentence was commuted leaving intact the fine and two years probation. Bush noted:
I respect the jury's verdict," Bush said in a statement. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison."
Reidie Rage Boy™ of course decried the Presidents constitutional perogative calling it disgraceful. Bush also stated:
Others point out that a jury of citizens weighed all the evidence and listened to all the testimony and found Mr. Libby guilty of perjury and obstructing justice. They argue, correctly, that our entire system of justice relies on people telling the truth. And if a person does not tell the truth, particularly if he serves in government and holds the public trust, he must be held accountable."
I will give this to Harry Reid. When Clinton got off with nothing more than impeachment but no conviction, Harry Reid announced that it was also disgraceful and that Clinton deserved conviction and a prison sentence for committing perjury. He also excoriated Clinton for the massive number of pardons at the end of Clinton's term including pardon's for financer Marc Rich and Hillary's brother, calling those two pardons, among others, a disgusting exhibit of power that the president has, but should never have used. Oh, wait, he didn't say either one of those things - my bad!
Update: For Moose's information, The Blah Blah Blog has a list of those pardoned by Clinton
Update 2: Oh, and let's not forget one of the more famous pardons:
Susan H. McDougal, Mail fraud, 18 U.S.C. § 1341; aiding and abetting in misapplication of Small Business Investment Corporation funds, 18 U.S.C. §§ 657 and 2; aiding and abetting in making false entries, 18 U.S.C. §§ 1006 and 2; aiding and abetting in making false statements, 18 U.S.C. §§ 1014 and 2 convicted in 1996, pardoned on December 22, 2000 - 30 days before he left office.

Let's see. How much damage did Libby's bad memory of a conversation on a case in which it had already been decided that there was no crime do to the U.S. versus those of Sandy Berger, who stole classified documents from the National Archives by stuffing them in his clothes and then destroyed them to cover up his and Clinton's actions (or inactions) in fighting terrorism as part of the investigation by the 9-11 Commission? Berger never faced prison time and his sentence on a more serious crime was much less. The Democrats making an issue of this just shows how shallow and dishonest they are to masses of uninformed voters. I'm just waiting for Ted Kennedy to say something.
P.S. I had to cut off the television tonight because the Democratic spokesmen were lying through their teeth and making me upset. One said that Clinton was found innocent (by the Senate), therefore he was not required to serve time in prison like Libby who was found guilty. That's leaving out a lot of the story.
Please explain that story to U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright of the Eastern District of Arkansas, who found Clinton in contempt, for which he was fined and lost his law license. Also, Clinton was never tried or served time for raping Juanita Broaddrick, which he never denied.
P.P.S. Bush should have issued a total pardon rather than just grant clemency for prison time.
