Society Runs Off the Road of Happy Trails
Dads on shows like "Father Knows Best" and "Leave it to Beaver" were replaced with the likes of Homer Simpson long ago. Threre was a time when television gave moral lessons, but not so much anymore. It's all about tolerance, and everything goes--and, the dad is always a dope with no brain or moral compass.
Part of the better times, in my view, included the Roy Rodgers cowboy movies, of which I was reminded by an unlikely source. The good guys wore white hats and evil always lost.
Today, on the RR web site, you can find the rules for the "Roy Rogers Riders Club." Do you come up to the old fashioned standards to join? Check it out, buckeroos!
Roy Rogers Riders Club Rules:
1. Be neat and clean.
2. Be courteous and polite.
3. Always obey your parents.
4. Protect the weak and help them.
5. Be brave but never take chances.
6. Study hard and learn all you can.
7. Be kind to animals and take care of them.
8. Eat all your food and never waste any.
9. Love God and go to Sunday school regularly.
10. Always respect our flag and our country.
Most lefties that I know wouldn't make it past the second rule, and they sure wouldn't get past nine and ten.
Would Roy Rogers and Dale Evans be proud of you today? Our values shouldn't change just because others in our society want to dump them.

One of My Favorites
There are a number of exciting places on the web today, but one of my favorites and one I check daily is Fausta's blog. I've been a fan of hers since the old days of the BAD HAIR Blog and it is every bit as enticing today as it was then.
Coming home from work today it was my intent to link to her weekly Carnival of Latin America and the Caribbean, but there is much more up. Of course, if you want to know what is going on in Latin America and the Caribbean there is no better place to go on the net. Fausta links like crazy and gives you anything worth knowing about that area of the world from the craziness of Hugo Chavez to the funding of FARC via Iran and Venezuela.
Also included is the possibility that the ruling party in Turkey, a decidedly Islamic party might be ruled ILLEGAL. Now, wouldn't that be interesting for all of us anti-islamists.
Lastly, she declares the Bush attempts to force a Palistinian/Israeli peace to be, are you ready for this, INSANE, and as a supporter of Israel, I can't say I disagree with her. Read it and see if you don't agree too.

Lucky In My Friends
One should be lucky with one's enemies, and Lord knows, I have been, but I'm even more lucky with my friends. People I've met over the internet and have corresponded with, over the last couple of years, newer friends but significant none the less. Friends who just a kind word or two from can make my day. Friends like (and in no particular order and certainly not an exhaustive list) Marc Cooper, my blog father; Kat, My dear friend Chrys, Ogre, Raven, Kender, Michael, Ian, Cinnamon, the Anchoress, Phil, Hoosier Army Mom, Nanc, Jimmy (a commenter and not a blogger) who I'm lucky to have as a beloved Uncle, Cao, Jeffery, Doug, Larwyn the wonder gal Always on Watch. And Angel, and Fausta, dear dear Fausta who helped me sell my first story to the Big Bloggers at Pajamas Media. Friends like The Woodster, Chrissie, Pat, Seth, Obi's Sister, Beth, Celeste, Jeremiah, Mustang, Pam and so many more I couldn't name them all if I tried.

Yes you, those of you that think nothing of gunning down students in a yeshiva just because you think some addlepated barbarian with delusions of grandeur 1400 years ago said that this is the way to 72 golden raisins or something like that. You who think that slaughtering tens of thousands of your fellow countrymen in the name of something as strange sounding as JanjaWeed, yes, you too! You who think that you can slaughter innocent civilians in towers or in a mall in Piccadilly Circus or a bar in Berlin or a school in Russia in the name of some deranged pseudo-political philosophy. You too are included!
This is not a letter asking you to behave, I have serious doubts about your ability to do so, even if you wanted to. This is not a letter asking you to love your fellow man, nothing you have done recently has given any indication that you have that ability. Nor is this a letter meant to shame you, for you have no capacity for that emotion.
This is a warning of disaster about to be visited on your woe-begotten existence. This is a warning that the world is reaching the point where good people will rise up and swat you like the vermin you are. This is a warning that you have gone too far, too fast and the good people of this earth are tired of you.
This is a warning that at some point, your lives will be forfeit in a most agonizing way. This is a warning that you have gone beyond the mercy that so many claim when the guns are turned on them. This is just a small blog, I'm not a big pip on the screen of anyone except perhaps to those that know and love me in spite of all of my faults. I have no power except the power to persuade some. But know this, I will, at every chance let the world know what cowards you and your fellow travelers are. I will call a spade a spade and point a shining light on the slime that you are. And you can be sure, that some how, some day, the world will become sick of your ilk and will destroy you once, and for ever!

Very nice sentiment, GM. However, there is just one part of that message that is completely inaccurate. That's the "FROM" line. While there are a few people who share your views here, few, if any, governments that are in existence today do. The US doesn't. Even Israel doesn't. And, in fact, the official "world" government, the UN, doesn't even believe anyone has done anything wrong:

I had the same discouraged thought as ogre. However, those of us of libertarian bent might have a long-term comfort. It is true that none of the world's governments, even our own, takes as firm a stance on this as many people know they should. But that may not be very different than governments have always been. Governments may be overwilling to go to war to increase their own power and prestige, but have always been notably shy about matters of justice that don't concern them directly.
To keep from ticking my fellow Americans off too much, I will note that we are at least the best of a bad lot - the smart kid in the dumb row.
But the opinions of people matter greatly in the long run. Even among those who make excuses for terrorists and advocate what I think are catastrophically naive responses, there is less and less approval. And in the Arab world, support for terrorism erodes even as people fear to stick their necks out. I believe this wheel is turning slowly, but in the right direction.

Ogre, Avi, "The World" does NOT include governments, for as you note, they are complicit in the terrorism by NOT smashing the state supported terrorists.

I enjoyed the comments concerning the non-action of our, and other governments. That brought another thought. To wit: Can population growth negate the representative type of government?
As the population grows, those folk that enjoy the non-working lifestyle, Called politicians, must necessarily pander to the other group of non-working group, called Welfare recipients. The first group depends absolutely on the second group for its existence.
As a direct result of this interrelated dependency we get the kind of politicians you see running to get control of the handle. Make no mistake, this is true for both major parties. Every politician that ever ran for office must, I repeat must be able to assure his/her supporters that there is something in it for him or her. Even when I ran for city council I had to assure my constituancy that they would benefit from my election. I convinced enough of them that I actually did get elected was expected to produce the miracle of doing what they think I said.
Could it be that our form of government is morphing into a democracy? Heaven forbid.I do not think that 200,000,000 people can operate as a democracy. It's becoming apparent that that number of people cannot operate as a representative republic. The reason being that those who gather enough votes to be in power can always provide enough benefit to assure their reelection. It's not "Power to the People", it is "Power to the elected few".

I am afraid the threat of retaliation, however grandiose and verbose, isn't going to enter into the thinking of a suicide attacker. If threats and retaliation and bluring the distinctions between perpetrators and their relatives worked, we'd already have finished this conflict a very long time ago.

The German Family Ministry is pushing to have a book it says slurs Judaism, Christianity and Islam labeled dangerous for children. The book's publisher says kids have a right to enlightenment.
...Along the way they encounter a rabbi, a bishop and a mufti who are portrayed as insane, violent and continually at each other's throats.
The rabbi is drawn in the same way as the caricatures from the propaganda of 1930's Germany; corkscrew curls, fanatical lights in his eyes, a set of predator's flashing teeth and hands like claws.
...The mufti fares little better. While he greets both animals at first as a quiet man and invites them into his mosque, he soon changes into a ranting fanatic. He assembles a baying Islamic mob....
The bishop, a pale fat man with a clearly insinuated predilection for child abuse....
Okay, maybe the Islamic portrayal is correct, but the story doesn't prove anything except that the left once again resorts to "demonizing" those who disagree rather than addressing the argument.

A New Blog by GM
Not that any of my 15 readers are all that interested, but I've started a new blog titled
Surviving Cancer and Other Atrocities - Notes on Medicine, Psychology and Politics. and I hope you all will go there from time to time. In fact, I urge those of you who would like to Join Unstoppable USA to send me an email and I'll get you in touch with the site administrator. Qualifications? Older USA citizens with many and varied World VIEWS. Views learned from life experiences to include political opinions, life opinions, world news, blogging, raising children or grandchildren, and thoughts on religion. Good "share" experiences through reads, travel, music, photographs and recipes. Now, I have to admit that this was NOT my idea, but the idea of a gentle lady who thinks far afield and is wanting to engage honest and open dialogue about the state of the world, and of ourselves as occupants of that world. If you felt that I represented myself as the "originator" of the idea, please know that that was not my intent. But the idea itself, from the gracious lady is an astoundingly brilliant idea and should grow, and grow and grow.
Here is my first substantive entry:
I AM NOT MY DIAGNOSIS DAMN IT!
Day 1: A trip to the ER - A number of years ago, I woke up with a terrific pain in my side. My late wife, who was a nurse thought for sure I had a kidney stone took me to the ER where the Doc ordered an IVP or Intravenous Pyelogram. Now, an IVP the Doc assured me is a simple painless procedure to take an X-Ray of my kidneys, ureters and bladder. He further explained that I would be standing, that they would insert an IV into my arm and then as the contrast material flowed through my veins and was filtered out by my kidneys.
What he didn’t explain, was how damnably uncomfortable it is having 20 gallons of fluid pumping through your veins all the while the X-Ray tech is saying “Hold it, hold it, just a little while longer, hold it more.” OK, OK, so it was only a liter, and not 20 gallons, but it sure felt like 20 gallons in my poor old distended bladder.

A NEW AUTHOR FOR GM'S CORNER
In June of last year, my beloved and I were about to embark on a much needed vacation and I would be out of touch with the blog for at least two weeks. I reached out to a good friend of mine who I had become familiar with via
Marc Cooper who thought as I did (well, not all the time, we conservatives aren't part of the hive mind of the Democratic Borg) who could argue with liberals without getting angry and who could and would be willing to expose himself to the vicissitudes of having to blog fairly regularly. I have not once regretted that decision, and when I returned from vacation, I asked Woody to stay on. Thank you Woody.
Now, I am about to introduce another author. The Real Ugly American who blogs at the same name and will post as Real Ugly American. My good friend RUA (or as I call him occasionally TRUA) is a rarity in the blogosphere, a conservative democrat (small d this time) who, fed up with the shenannigans of the national Democrats decided to blog his frustrations. Shortly after RUA started blogging, he contacted me asking for suggestions for his blog and I was more than delighted to help out. Subsequently he calls me his blogfather, though I'm really not, I'm very, very proud to call him friend. He has taken his blog to new heights and has done exceptionally well.
So, in the next few days (as RUA becomes adjusted to the publishing system of GM's Corner) you will see articles posted by Real Ugly American. Be sure and comment, and be sure to add his site to your favorites.
Oh, and by the way, neither Woody nor I are going anywhere, we'll still be posting articles lambasting the left, center and the right when necessary and proper (of course, that will be about a 90%-8%-2% split) and posting humor, politics and mental health (mine and yours, not democrats, they don't have any).

Renaissance Man
If you are lucky in life you will have many, many friends. Some are close, some are stodgy, tried and true. Some are weird, some are WYSIWYG. And sometimes, if you are very lucky and very good at picking such a friend when they do come by, you will find one who is all of the above.
Such a friend of mine is a fellow by the name of, well, I'll call him Tom short for Thomas which is good because that happens to be his real name. I first met Tom in May of 2001 when I began some consulting work for an adolescent substance abuse treatment center. Tom was the director of operations. We soon became more than just nodding acquaintances, but not quite friends. Over the years however, a true friendship developed between me the wiser and younger and him the slightly older (he'll never see 59 years old again). Tom is a world class practical joker, but never the mean sort. Once, he took my picture and unbeknownst to me treated it with his many digital skills on Photoshop and making my head a perfect Chia Head. The kids in the facility noted that it really wasn't like me because I had this "great big bald spot" on the back of my head. One adolescent looked at the photo, then at me, then back at the photo and thought I could cover up the bald spot if I used Miracle Gro. Nice kid. Tom got a laugh out of that, and still does as a matter of fact.
In the very early part of our relationship, there was a fire alarm set off by one of the tar pots used in re-roofing the building. The fire department came out with the captain in one of the largest fire trucks I have ever seen in my life. I walked up to him to explain that it had been a false alarm but before I could even introduce myself he asked (in a rather ticked off voice) "Who's in charge here?"
Since I was only a consultant I pointed to the Director of Operations and said he is. Again in a stern and ticked off voice the Fire Captain asked "What's your name?" Tom, with out batting an eye or any sign of being dishonest said "George M. Roper" Thanks Tom!
Tom is also one of those guys that likes to do nice things for his friends when he is not pulling jokes. When I was diagnosed with cancer, Tom was there with encouragement, prayers and friendship. He visited me in the hospital every day that I was there and those visits were deeply appreciated. Tom commiserated with me when my hair started falling out because of the chemo-therapy and talked about having to cover my head when outside so the glare wouldn't blind pilots flying nearby. But he also took a photo and treated it with kindness, respect and true friendship. He put it up on the web and if you want to see what I really look like, click here. I told Tom that every time I watched it, I got a little weepy eyed. Initially he said only "Yeah!"
But telling stories of Tom's practical jokes and digital skills is not the purpose of this post, telling you about this great guy is.
Tom had a rough childhood, mother died of cancer when he was very young, dad was kind of cruel and abusive. Tom ran away from home at about 15 or so and lived in a car for a couple of years. Encouraged to join the Army by a judge who didn't think Tom was a bad boy (note: The judge didn't ask ME!!!) he enlisted and served with distinction.
Over the years, Tom has worked in a number of industries, most notably the exciting field of Art. Now, I'm not a serious connoisseur of art, but "I know what I like." I have a "chopped" Dali print, a number of signed and numbered prints of Itzchak Tarkay. But I digress, Tom has forgotten more about art than I will ever know. And so, he has opened his own online shop to sell quality art prints and posters. Works by Da Vinci, Picasso, Dali and Van Gogh. Works by Ansel Adams, Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera not to mention Andy Warhol and Monet. Great pieces at great prices. So, I've added a link to the jpeg at the upper left and if you click on it, it will take you to his site. I've also added a blogad in the side bar on the right. Browse around and see if you don't see something you like.
Full Disclosure: I don't get a nickel from Tom if you buy something, but I think that if you do, I will be very appreciative.
So, in part, this is to get even with you Tom, but in a big part it is also to tell you what a great friend you are.
Tom, I have to see you 5 days a week, but that is ok, I can take some anti-nausea medicine when I get home! ;-)

GM,
I believe you have set a very good example before us. Too few of us laud our friends (and others we admire) publically. We ought to do that more. Even if it is just in front of their spouses and/or children.
Of course, I am NOT referring to the almost obligatory boilerplate introductions and such that one gets in biggish organizations conducting meetings and such. Those all smack of toadyism or pandering....which seem (to me) like the crowing is being done by someone that actually wants something in return.
So, readers, laud those people who you geniunely think are worthy. Even if you just call up your children and tell them your spouse is ACES and why.
And in conclusion, I think GM is one heck of a gent and NO, I don't want to borrow his car, get a loan, or anything else.
Like that.

First, let me say thank you to GM for setting up my user account. I am sure that Woody will appreciate it as well.
That said, I believe that the Blogosphere ranks right up with Talk Radio in the effect that it has had in breaking the leftist grasp on information available to those not espousing their views. For that reason, I am proud to help out a friend and fellow Balance of Power contributor with a project he is currently working on.
It is called Blogging Man 2007 and will be a blog conference targeted at those on the right side of the political spectrum. I think it will be a great opportunity to not only meet some of the faces behind the blogs, but also to help continue the establishment of blogs as legitmate sources of news and views. If I can arrange to be in the country at that time, I will certainly be attending. Hopefully you can too.
