I know nothing else about Khalidi, other than some biographical information I picked up on Wikipedia and news reports. I have to say, based on the article, he seems to have a very reasonable, thoughtful approach to the "situation" in Israel and Palestine. There are obviously lots of emotions on both the Israeli/Jewish and Palestinian sides, but it is the extremists on both sides of the fence that keep the pot simmering at all times. When I think about the issue from the Palestinian perspective (something I wish more of my fellow supporters of Israel would do from time to time) I find it impossible to come up with a more reasonable take on the situation than the one presented by Khalidi. To love and support Israel, and to view it as the ultimate protection for Jews from another Holocaust, does not require one to completely disregard the suffering of the Palestinian people, most of whom committed no sin other than to be born in a land claimed by another. I can't imagine what it must feel like to one day wake up and be told your land is no longer yours and you have to leave. My own people have been in that situation before, and it turns my stomach that the experience of my family is used to justify keeping another people down. As Khalidi rightly points out, sympathizing with the Palestinian situation does not mean excusing them for their own impotence in bringing about the changes necessary to end that situation. There's enough blame to go around, but the world would be a much better place if everyone could at least see things from the viewpoint of the "other side."

What he finds isnt a clash of civilisations but a real merge, where music and culture are globalised and where this mix is planting the seeds for a genune grassroots rebellion against the dictatorship and lack of freedom in the Arab world. Woody, who I imagine has never travlled to the middle east or read any books on the matter, sees this picture of a young Palestinian and in his racist mind imagines it to be a condemnation of Obama. I see it as a metephorical image of hope and solidarity and of the possibility of going over and above these arguments which charactwerise people as evil and reduce complex cultural exchanges to mere characterisation as evil or othering. I'd reccomend people take a look at Levine's book. I admit that I betrayed my own vow to not engage Woody, but this picture really inspired me.

There is an immense amonunt of schlolarship in the field of middle eastern studies, much of it not very political, but dry historical stuff about the history of Palestinian people, their writing, poetry and history. Especially since they have most likely seen American Money, heard of American authors, poets, statesmen, that actually predate 1964. He could read books about Americans and America some written during the 18th century.

At what point can we say "nations" arise, in what ways are communities imagined and how is this tied to historyu and the formation of nation states. Israel, for example arose as a nation state, in a miodern sesne, witha flag and a standing army only in1948. America was once a series of colonies and before inhabited by native people. It's simply untrue and ahistorical to suggest that there was no expression of Palestinian identity before 1967 (warren says 1964 bwar where i assunme he means 1967) What he he then say about the British mandate period where the british put down large scale rebbellions, for independence at that time involving jewish, christain and muslim inhabitants of Palestine. These rebellions at the time was the l;argest mass reistance to the british, compared tp some of the later campaigns led by Ghandhi in India. As for violence I agree wityh Woody but where is his comdemnation of the greater vioence waged by an occupy8ng army agauinst a much less armed population. Any examination od say B'tselem records will show that acts that are illegal undr internatuionaol law: atgertted killings, confiscation of property, willful; killing, use opf human shields are regularly occuring in gaza ans the west bank. Finla tghing is Woody's objection, saying that because of awful acts commited in the name of Palestinians their claim to self deternation is recued. I have, in fact, never advocated anything but peaceful coexsitence in Israel/Palestine predicated on the full recognition of international law, an adknowldegement and accounting of history and equality. At this late date I think that the diplpmatic record, is and has been quite clear. My own position which Roper willfully dostorts is stated above. He also seems to think that the maintainance of a complex system involving stationing tens of thousands of armed troops in another peopels land, creating settlemts with an infurstucture of of roads, barbs wires and walls, conencted wioth checkpoints, giving settlers extra rights predicated on ethnicity all the while employing force coercion and violence is somehow "defensive". The interesting thing about the American right is how narrow their expereinces are. Palin didn't own a passport, Bush had no interest in the rest of the world and I gurantee that Roper and others have read little to no scholarlty books on this topic nor have they visited the middle east, yet they create the most grodd generalizations preidcated on ignorance. Alright some responses to the various commentators here, as I'll try to be respectful. AOW is simply beyond the pale. The very idea that "muslim" could be used as a smear against Obama, is an affront to MLK's idea that we should be judged by the content of our character. Colin Powell rightly denounded it and it seems clear that the obsessive attempts by AOW and his seemingly idiotic non arab muslim friends to lnk Obama to Islam say much more about the accusers than anything else. As for Roper, where to begin? The very idea that you could imagine that myself, someone with secular left politics, who in this very thread decried "toxic mullahs preaching hatred of a west they know little about" shows how much of a racist and idiot you are, IQ notwithstanding. It's interesting, too, to look at our sources. While I reference Israeli newspapers, scholarship and a number of human right organisations Roper only produces the propaganda work of out front advocacy groups. He raised Jenin not me. As for sleeping, thanks Roper for asking. I find that if I get a run in the day and then chamomile tea while I read at night, sleep is no problem. I think that this is what people mean when they refer to the "hate American right". The utter contempt that Woody's holds for a large part of the population who make up this country is truly remarkable. He has evolved into a bitter, senile character whose politics are simply a vesself for his own insecurity and bigotry. According to this post, the portion of the population who supports Obama (about half of voters) all don't work or are free loving hippies. Is this either possible or rational. Over at Coopers, Woody suggests that blacks have no real commitment to voting. Thye guy's a creep and shame on GM Roper for dwellling in this muck.

Let's clear up something, Ahmed.  You misstated what I wrote, so here was my entire response to you at Coopers:

Ahmed, why are you so offended by what most people know to be true–black voter turnout in bad weather turns out to be very low? Is that wrong to say? Why? Even Democratic leadership knows that. Obama isn’t taking any chances, so he’s out there trying to get them to vote early and often and to even skip work to vote for him.

And, Ahmed, Khalidi did work for Yasser Arafat–a terrorist. That’s serious. Khalidi appears as unrepentant for serving the radical PLO as is Bill Ayers for his terrorism. If Khalidi has never expressed remorse for serving this terror movement, then nothing he says today in moderation can be taken at face value.

Did you know that Khalidi and Ayers were best friends, too. There’s a few too many terrorist links with Obama’s friend Khalidi for me to give Khalidi a pass as some benign mideast expert.

If Marc followed your calls for bans, he could lead off with you who defend terrorists and terrorism. People who state the truth, no matter how unpopular to the left, don’t threaten the nation, but terrorists do.

I see an amazing discourse has presented itself here.  I don’t mean “amazing” in the sense that it provides any intellectual stimulation, but rather from the unusual standpoint of one man attempting to stifle free expression through ad hominem assault.  So then, if I understand this correctly, a man who exercises his right to articulate an opinion is a “sad and shallow prick” because his opinion happens to differ from the other fellow.

 

This seems very similar to the kinds of strategies employed by socialist elitists who use the power of the state and its resources to violate a citizen’s right to privacy, and castigate him simply because he dared to ask a question of a presidential candidate, or perhaps the tactic of punishing a television station for similar reasons. 

 

I may have misunderstood this entire discussion, but on the off chance that I can recognize intellectual dishonesty ten out of ten times, let me just say that Woody should be ashamed of himself for daring to have an opinion, and then actually expressing it.  He apparently forgot that first amendment rights only pertain to Marxists, who are largely in agreement with one another, and identified enemies of the State even if unindicted co-conspirators.

 

Overall, the exchange was quite instructive, considering that the post may have set a record for the blogosphere’s shortest essay ever.

G.M., Frank is not referencing the comments, but my post.  He's right that I did change the wording slightly, but not for the reason that he says. 

When I originally did the post, I was in a hurry and had to rush off.  When I got back and re-read it, I thought that it would be clearer and more readable with a simple change in connecting words and by making it one sentence instead of two.  Absolutely no meaning or intent was changed at all.  Frank caught it in between the revision.  That was it.

Now, he tries to accuse us of something sinister.  He's wrong.  Frank's complaint shows the paranoia, desperation, false accusations, and dishonesty of the left to elect Obama using "any means necessary." 

Attacks will only get worse if Obama is elected.

13 I'll tell you what else is strange.  The post that you see without comments displayed leaves off the last part of my one sentence, but the entire sentence shows when you go to the view which displays all comments.  That's a technical issue, but there surely has to be something sinister going on.

Frank, you didn't challenge me.  You brought up a non-issue, for which I offered a perfectly reasonable and accurate explanation.  Occasionally, I will tweak a post if, after I walk away, I come up with a thought to make something more understandable or complete.  Your "gotcha" is without merit, as is your claim that G.M. and I cry over at Marc's.  Is that all you have to say?   

16 What is it with this Ahmed guy?  Can't he keep what happens at Cooper's blog - at Cooper's blog?  He's like a kid I knew in school who, when you were through arguing with him and walked off, would continue to follow you down the hall and into the next room harping at you.  The people in the room have no idea what's going on.  All they see is two people bickering.   If you're just looking for attention, do something worth paying attention to.

I don't give a flip what kinds of arguments you guys get into elsewhere.  If I did, I would go there to read them.  It does no good to air this kind of petty sniping outside the context of where it began.  No one understands, no one cares. And it's a clear display of disrespect for anyone else who happens to stop in for a read.

I haven't visited this blog in some time and this kind of bickering, which I simply don't have time for, nor the inclination to make time for, is part of the reason why I went elsewhere for conversation.  As much as I adore GM and have respect for Woody I have no desire to muddle my way through snapping and back-biting comments over something that has nothing to do with the subject.

Hmmm.  Depending upon one's politics, one may suddenly realize that the troops are smarter than very many others.

Most military types live in the (VERY) real world and things are more than earnest.  They tend, generally, to be off-put by BS Artists.

2 You can be assured that the Democrats will use any means possible to block absentee votes for McCain just  as they did in 04 by claiming that some obscure block was not checked, not that it actually made difference in identity or registration or legal right to vote.
 It is already occurring in OHIO where ACORN has been up to it usual no good. The Republicans have filed suit over the blocked absentee ballots cast in early voting but of course the "powers that be" in OHIO are aligned with OBAMA and the LEFT.
 OBAMA and the DNC have 10,000 attorneys across the country but especially in places where military absentee ballots are most prevalent.  Those who do the most and serve well will be disenfranchised by the very ones who rights they protect while others are given unquestionable right to vote without benefit of even checking to see that they fulfill the citizenship requirement.

God bless all those in uniform who now serve and  for those who have served this country with honor .

Barack Obama got out of the shower and was drying off when he looked in the mirror and noticed he was white from the neck up to the top of his head.

In sheer panic and fearing he was turning white and might have to start working for a living, he called his doctor and told him of his problem.
